I have a better system than a nanny-auto brake system...they're called EYES. I watch traffic far enough ahead that I can stop without slamming on brakes. With the type of freight I haul (raw glass), hard braking breaks the load.

Talked to a guy who had it and he was telling me about a situation where it braked before he was able to see a moose in the roadway at night. I imagine it could be a good thing in certain situations.

At highway speeds with a distracted driver I don't think it will stop the truck in time to completely avoid a stopped traffic situation but would reduce the extent of carnage.

Calm down everyone. I don’t think he was implying anyone should rely on it. So everyone can jump back out of the guys throat.

Their are two parts to the system. The emergency braking. It just what it says, it takes over if the driver is distracted or traffic stops very quick. It's to avoid a rear end accident if possible.

The adaptive cruise control is more driver helping system. It keeps the following distance. It looks 4 seconds down the road and reacts to the traffic. I have car and truck pass me and pull in front of my truck. Some are only 0.8 second or 50 feet in front of me. The system will respond by letting them pull away. To keep the following distance at 4 seconds. It can see if they are going faster then you are going. Very few drivers leave 4 seconds or more space before the pulling in front of my truck when they pass. I had one car the system said was 29 feet in front of me.

When you see these rear end accident and driver don't seem to even hit the brakes. You have wonder if these system could have avoided the accident.

Of course not. The fear is that too many WILL rely on it. Like this idiot with lane departure warning...

As one Consumer Reports reader mused, “Lane-departure warning made me realize that I weave too much, so I'm a better driver now. However, it's annoying in everyday driving, so I turn it on only when I'm driving while sleepy. Then I'm happy to have it.”

There’s a story in Landline magazine about test driving a new truck that’s suppose to be able to stop on a dime in a collision situation.
