Did they pay for your TWIC card like a good company should or did you have to pay out of pocket?

Any company that a driver considers to be a good company, should pay for those cards and the time spent obtaining them. Anything less is a bad company.

Knight wants their underpaid drivers to pay for EVERYTHING up front before they will reimburse the driver. The TWIC Card is really to enable them to send more drivers to ports to get loads for them. Drivers don't earn an extra penny!

One of Knights' main scams is that they promise to pay for your expenses after they get your original receipt. So, what happens is they claim they "lost" your receipt and can't pay you or tell you they are NOT going to reimburse you after all.

They need more drivers to quit so they can hire drivers (at the new lower pay scales) who are more desperate for work than the current drivers who stay there not being paid for their 3 - 5 day layovers.

 

I voluntarily repaid my company for my TWIC.Reason being that it has my name on it and will go where I go.Reason#2-when I tire of using the card noone will tell me I cost them money.
I think if a company requires anything after hiring you they should at least offer to pay for it.You don`t have to let them if you don`t want to.

You ASSume correctly, Keep your receipts on everything - never can tell what a good tax accountant, errr... crook, can get away with!

 

TWIC??? define please?

 

Transportation Workers Identity Card - issued by the TSA. You want to get into a secure port facility, you're going to need one. Many of them still provide escorted access, but that's supposed to change.

 

How often do you have to renew these? Is it same as hazmat renewals or are these longer?

 

TWIC is good for 5 years. If you get it at the same time as your CDL, the expiration period for the CDL/hazmat and TWIC are the same, I believe. The hazmat background check can be used for part of the TWIC background check... saves you $28 or so.

Right now, getting the TWIC taken care of is a hassle because of the requirement that you go back to the same office as you enrolled to pick it up. I opted to not tie the TWIC to my CDL because of the hassle... it only would have been good for 3 yrs when my CDL expires.
