Bud A. there is another explanation he used the brakes so much on those roads that the auto slack adjusters did not have time to readjust plus they were probably smoking hot when he got down that last grade from Bailey down to C 470 split. I have been driving this before I70 was even built. From Look Out mountain down that last grade is enough to cook a set of brakes alone not even considering the rest of his trip. If he had done this before he must have gotten lucky the first time without stacking it up. Maybe this goof ball he has will get him convicted quick so we don't have to spend a bunch of money on the trial. As for his route punched in to google maps that's where his route came from 209 miles shortest run.

He was probably much more cautious the first trip,
My first trip up the haul road, I was not only overly cautious, but chained up a lot of the way, the second trip did not require much chaining and was quite the education before I made prudhoe. lol

  4. That's how inexperienced truckers pick their route for sure...punch it into Google maps and follow blindly.

I've heard of truckers who punch a route into Google maps...and it will take them off an interstate for, like, two miles and then have them get back on the interstate after driving through a town and having to make tight turns! Just to save a mile or two! It's madness. Even if you're in a tiny little car, it's madness. Getting off "main routes" only makes sense if you're walking every inch of it.

If people are going to use Google maps while driving big trucks, then why doesn't Google maps have a function you can punch in to say "I AM DRIVING A BIG TRUCK"?

I mean, think about it...you can punch in "I'm walking" and "I'm driving" and "show me a bus route." So why not an option to punch in "I'm driving a big truck, keep me on suitable roads and alert me regarding restrictions like bridge heights."

  6. Knowing how to use an old school Motor Carriers Atlas made from the flesh of dead trees works about the best of all. Of course, the Atlas doesn't talk to you and alert you about your next exit.

By the way...and I talked about it on another thread...I'm also OUTRAGED at this guy and his lawyer trying to lay the blame upon some random, unknown trucker who had the audacity to be in the emergency lane. Like, oh, really? That was Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos Idiota-Estupido-Cabeza's one and only chance to get off that road and avoid the accident?

Also, if there really was a trucker pulled into the emergency lane, how does anybody know that driver was NOT having an emergency? Honestly, an emergency can be as small as "I inhaled the sugar from a sugar doughnut and I was choking," so I pulled over. That excuse has flown for me, before, with an officer who checked to see that I was OK when I was pulled over. If you're having an emergency, you're entitled to use the emergency lane. And the emergency doesn't have to be as big as "my truck is on fire."

This guy Rogel...I look at his face and I get mad. He reminds me of the pool boy in The Bird Cage with Robin Williams, walking around in short-shorts and singing, "She works hard for the money." He reminds me of the guy in Scarface who marries Tony Montana's sister. He just has this LOOK OF AN IDIOT WHO HAS BEEN OUT IN THE SUN TOO LONG.

Google won't put in a truck function because that might open them up to serious liability. You should see the disclaimers on the Rand McNally and Garmin GPS systems when they boot up. Google hides all its disclaimers so it can continue to spy on you everywhere you go. They don't want that stuff up front and visible.

  8. I see your argument but raise you with the following argument:

Google is already taking on all kinds of liability by creating navigation for people who drive smaller vehicles, people who walk, and even people who want to punch in a route for bus or light rail. (I've actually never used the last one on Google because I find the maps provided by city bus and train systems are easier to understand, but I see where "mass transport" with a little streetcar symbol is available on Google maps)

So why would Google worry about liability associated with big trucks when there is so much potential revenue to be gained, and they're already taking on liability by helping everybody else navigate? Yes, I agree liability is always a concern and it plays a role, but I think the real answer is Google has found itself outpaced by competitors who produce good navigation systems that truckers already use and trust.

I will say I found, online, this highly technical discussion about "How To Use Google Maps In Truck Mode." Here's a link.

    https://www.connectedwiki.com/google-maps-truck-mode/

By the way, you want to see the definition of "pathetic?" Well, just hand a Motor Carrier Atlas to a 21-year-old and tell him to navigate using THAT instead of his phone. If you gave 100 truckers age 21 a Motor Carrier Atlas as an experiment, told them they can't throw it away but they can do whatever else they need to do with the Motor Carrier Atlas in their truck...

I bet you'd have more of those youngsters using the pages for toilet paper than actually using the Motor Carrier Atlas to navigate.
