I have a class A automatic restriction with only a few months experience and was wondering if i should go to school or train through employer to learn manual and get acclimated to backing up and driving a manual transmission. I started off with a class B driving refuse trucks and have 4-5 years experience in the field and is what i do now. Should i just apply for a class A job?
Should i go to my local CDL school or train through employer.

There is a local community college that offers a 10.5 week course for a reasonable price.

Most employers are switching to auto only. Depends on what you want to do and what company you want to be withtscottme, Texas_hwy_287 and Acostaelias132 Thank this.

I was thinking about driving tankers once i have a enough experience. I'm just pretty ignorant when it comes to the trucking industry and would like to know more information due to me not being very experienced.FlaSwampRat Thanks this.

My first company was superior Carriers they weren’t all autos yet they may be now. But most all the gas haulers and cryo in the area were all auto. You may be fine but if you can get in the local school for $1500 or less I think you should take the courseFlaSwampRat Thanks this.

That is what I was leaning towards. After I complete the course should I apply for a tanker job right away or just find a decent OTR job? Thanks a lot!

The school will try to sway you towards otr but apply for what you want to do. Even before school starts I did I was hired contingent me getting my cdl, endorsements, and school certificateFlaSwampRat and Acostaelias132 Thank this.

The school I went to offered a refresher course. That might be good for relearning how to jam gears and back a semi.

You got access to an old ag tractor with manual trans? Typically 4 gears on the trans and a high low rear. Most people say you take off in the gear you want, because theyre unsynchronized transmissions. But you can double clutch and float these with practice. Not much different than a big truck trans.. You can learn the meat and potatoes on one.
FlaSwampRat Thanks this.
