My daughters were never secured when they were riding with me, except when up front and had the seat belt on.
I would insist on it when going through a heavy traffic area or on roads that were risky, but otherwise they were usually back in the bunk playing on the computer.
When I was training with a mentor we also used no restraint net. Those things are a PITA if you have to be under it.
It isn't much different than being in a motorhome. I doubt the people in back doing their own thing are always strapped in either. Heck, mom is probably cooking dinner back there.
Or on an airliner. Belt in for take off and landing, but otherwise free to move about the cabin.
But a sudden and deep air pocket will send you into the ceiling, injuring or even killing you.
But, I never had more than one daughter at a time in the truck. I would never have 3 or more people in there because it would leave at least one person at high risk in high risk situations.

No one wears seat belts on the Greyhound either, except for the driver.
Or in taxi cabs for the most part.
Which is kind of crazy, because they are often high risk drivers. -
Every generation is more protective of their kids than the last one, to the point of kids can't hardly do anything anymore, the next generation will be no different, eventually kids will not be learn to cope with the basics that keep them alive once they finally leave home, I am afraid.
A few years ago at a family reunion we were heading out on our annual rock crawling four wheeling trek up to some water falls in the mountains. One of the guys I had known since I was in school and while he was younger than I was he went running around with me quite a bit back then, would not let his son go with us.
There was probably around 20 rigs following me, but I was in an old blazer with no top or doors, and rock marked about anywhere you could lay a hand, folks that didn't have a rig would pile in it. I had built a roll bar and had the spare tire mounted laying down on top of the roll bar, that is where my son rode, he had a bungee cord he called his seat belt. Anyway this kid wanted to go and was squalling and bawling. I finally ask his dad what was wrong with him, and reminded him how wild he had run when he was a kid. I also ask how he would have liked growing up if hid dad was anything like he was being and not have let him go with me when he was a kid.
He finally put him and sat him where he wanted him to stay, and ask me to please not leyt him get hurt. lol
I told him to look wher emy son was riding, did he think I was going o get crazy wild. lolMrsWJAA Thanks this. -
If you have not had the Baltimore slam you have not lived.
Described as child in front seat of car. Daddy slams on brakes tosses anchor for whatever was in the street.
To keep kid from going anywhere the one arm slams into kids chest. Seatbelt or not. Sometimes the marks stay there for a week or two.
We had a big old wagon in our time kids in the playroom way in the back. Don't bother adults up front.
Daddy usually did not understand that if you did hit something the kid would become a thousand pound object slamming into the glass and dash etc. Due to Issac Newton. Many cars in those days had nothing for seatbelts.
Its a wonder we survived at all.MrsWJAA Thanks this. -
If it were a closed track situation like that, ya dang right my kid would be able to go... might throw on a helmet for ####s and giggles, but I wouldn't have a problem with it.... highways are a different animal though, idiots that drink and drive and do other stupid stuff....

And yet we never got close to going to extinct. lol It was just natural instinct to grab the one in the middle when an emergency came up, my grand parents did, my parents did, and so did too. I would even turn loose of the handle bars with my left hand just before the bike hit the ground from a wheelie or jump to grab my kids. lol
I agree in a way, but then think about all the 100 mph plus trips we took everywhere we went back in the day, and folks drank back then too, and I can even remember doing quite a bit of stupid stuff myself. lol -
And the ones that did fall out. Well they only fell out once.
-
Not all of them, kids grew up a little tougher back then. lol
I know of a few that fell out, but they were old enough to know better and survived. I never fell out, but was riding on a bumper once holding on to the top of a tailgate along with one other guy when the tailgate opened, what a wreck. -
Anybody else remember carhooding in the snow behind a four wheeler at 45mph, that was always fun until someone tried to wrap you around a telephone pole.
-
Don't you mean till somebody did wrap you around a pole? lol. best hoods ever was off the 40's model rigs, that came close to a point on the front, they were so easy to hang on you could almost ride them through a roll. lol
