Just something to think about, since he has some off road experience. On most years there are a couple of companies in this area that would hire him to run a side and or belly dump in the summer months, if you only need to replace 50 to 60 grand a year, then go back to Mt and take the winter off.
Have CDL, no school, no OTR experience

There is a couple of gravel companies that would probably work around it. If a guy doesn't live here, it is pretty much a 2 years deal to haul freight, but there are a couple of companies that have helped a guy get his license and hired them with no experience.

I hate to say it but C.R. England probably has some dedicated accounts up there. Send husband to school in Salt Lake City for about two months and he'll return as a shiny new professional driver with a big red truck. If him already possessing a CDL is an issue, simply have him surrender it to local DMV and start from scratch
I've met a ton of friendly folk in their 60's in relatively similar predicaments while at C.R. some of which I still chat with time to time. Apparently the benefits are really good. -

Prime in Salt Lake City. He could go through their school and get paid decently during the road training.
