Is this oil change for a VNL780 D13? The filter used looks like a Cummings filter?
-
Yes 5w40

D13 yes. Filter's are upto you. I prefer the Donaldson but I do use Baldwins unless I purchase the Donaldson before doing the oil change.

There are websites that will tell you where you can dispose your used oil for free. The limit is usually 5 gallons per location. Put the used oil inside the oil containers. Last time I returned some, they told me they would also take the bottles, which is good. The DD15 holds about 10.5 gallons. Now it is true that you won’t save much. You also need to invest in some tools like the socket to remove the filter caps.

Anyone run 5 30 synthetic or 5 40 synthetic -
I change my D13 oil every 500hrs, regardless of mileage. I use Chevron Delo oil and Baldwin filters, because that is what is available locally. 15w40 in summer and 10w30 in winter.

Whatever oil you put in it, make sure it meets the standards of the engine manufacturer. If you go full synthetic, I strongly suggest having oil samples pulled every 10 or 15k miles. Even if the oil itself is rated for 50k miles, oil samples can warn you of other problems, and the earlier you notice fuel, glycol, or excess particulates in the oil, the better.
Oil samples are pretty cheap, and you do not have to wait for them to come back. Pull the sample and a week later call the place that pulled the sample and have them email you the results. Just be sure to verify you got YOUR sample, not someone else's.PE_T Thanks this. -
Factory Volvo SEVERE Service interval gives maximum protection. Changing prior to that is only throwing away time and money.
15-20k Oil PMs are a complete waste with Volvo 3 Filter Engines W/ Factory Bypass filter
If your want to potentially keep the oil a little cleaner, change the OEM Bypass filter at half way through the Intervals.77fib77 Thanks this. -
25k for me or every 3 months, Providence (Rural King) semi synthetic 10w-30 seems to be working well these days.
Newer truck (2021) doesn't have a bypass filter like my 15 which I don't love unless it's the day I'm buying filters. We'll see how that goes.
I don't know the logic behind Volvo not putting bypass filters on the newer D13's.77fib77 Thanks this.
