The other question is how are you taking your 10 hour breaks since you have no sleeper?

The only way to stop your 14 in this situation is stop for 10 hours...be it a motel, a relatives house, watching 4 movies in a theater and dinner out somewhere. As long as you are out of the truck for an uninterrupted 10 straight hours.

He said in an earlier post that they stay in hotels.....

So OP, you are correct. If you start your day at 8am, and drive for 11 hours straight (factoring in your required 30 min. break in the first 8 hours) your co-driver, who also started the same time, will be able to drive the remaining 3 hours of your 14 hour day. Done this way, you will only have a total of 13 1/2 hours driving, due to your 30 min. break. Only way around it legally, would be to drive the first 8 hours, then when you are due for your 30 min. break, let your co-driver take over then and he can drive the remaining 6 hours of your 14. Only way you can get the full 11 hours driving in.

Now if you have stops along the way, all this is out the window.....

Legally, probably not, although his company may require it anyhow.

He does still have to enter weigh stations, however.

Hours of service is not determined by a cdl.
    Hours of Service
    Who Must Comply?
Most drivers must follow the HOS Regulations if they drive a commercial motor vehicle, or CMV.

In general, a CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business and is involved in interstate commerce and fits any of these descriptions:

    • Weighs 10,001 pounds or more
    • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more

If your box truck is a crew cab they sell sleeper berth kits for about 900 bucks. They are controversial at this point in time. Hot shotters use them to log off duty and sleeper berth. Very easy to install and doesn't require any welding or major changes to the vehicle. If your truck is not a crew cab but it would be profitable to buy one so your drivers can team drive it might be something to look into. The fmcsa has not made a final ruling on these retro fit sleepers yet.

Just like there's only 24 hours in a day you only get a 14 hour window to complete your day once you do your pre trip inspection.

At that point the co-driver has been on duty for 8 hours as well.

Correct. But since the co-driver has only been "On duty-not driving" he is still eligible to drive the remaining 6 hours of their 14.
