Yep, great read on both counts, DY. I know that "formerly" low bridge in Melrose Park very well.
I applaud your grandfather for his input to 'set the record straight'.

This article must have been some potent fuel to pour on the fire for the safe trucking advocates.
Look at some of the poor habits he chose-
tailgating cars
running egregiously past legal hours
speeding (was this still the era of 55 for trucks?)
log falsification
unauthorized passenger
and company dispatching a load with illegal time limit.
This was a fun read though, sort of a cool literary time capsule.double yellow Thanks this. -
The thing is, he actually had 8 hours to spare on what would have been a legal run at the time:
Leave 10pm Thurs
Stop 7am Friday (500 miles)
Leave 3pm Friday
Stop midnight Friday/Sat (1000 miles)
Leave 8am Sat
Stop 5pm Sat (1500 miles)
Leave 1am Sun
Stop 10am Sun (2000 miles)
Leave 6pm Sun
Stop 10pm Sun (2200 miles)Infosaur Thanks this. -
