I have a 1998 Freightliner Century with a Detroit Series 60. Running down the interstate at 65mph and water temp is normal at 180ish degrees and it randomly rises to 200 degrees and the fan kicks on but goes back to normal to 180-185 degrees within a second. It was doing this pretty often.

Seems normal. Operating range is 190-210 IIRC. My fan kicks on at 200-205 f.

I was told it was normal especially in the arizona heat, but wasn’t sure and wanted a second opinion. I’m fairly new to Detroit engines.

Normal. If it stays hot, with fan on, radiators plugged or fins are blocked. Really unless it’s 95-100 degrees, loaded heavy, or up a hill. Fan shouldn’t come on at all. High A/C compressor pressure may be causing it. Being a 98, radiator could be getting old, especially if it’s original. Wouldn’t hurt to flush it good, sometime. Clean the fins up on it, and cac, and A/C condenser. Make sure it’s getting good flow. Meanwhile you can rinse it off good with water. First from backside, with engine off. No high pressure, just a garden hose. Then at idle, kicked up on high idle, maybe 1400-1500, with fan on, spray it from front. Sucks all the water through. Buys some time.
