Depends on the agent, captives (write just one carrier) are less flexible than multi-line agents. Also, if they focus on transportation rather than just dabble in it they are much more willing to work with you rather than quickly run to the insurance carrier with your issues.

Once you have been operating long enough to get away from the likes of Progressive you will find that your insurance agent can be an integral part of your safety and risk management team.

Several of my customers have very active participation from their agents, my largest and longest customer has me work hand in hand with the risk managers at their insurance carrier to guide their compliance program.

Don't be afraid of your agent, unless they are part of the call center at the underwriter directly (like some Progressive "agents"). You agent should have your best interest in mind, if you don't get renewed he loses his commission, so he should be ready to help guide you on these issues.

MVR doesn't really show inspection results - they might line up if there were tickets involved, but you have to run a PSP report for full Inspection results.

I guess you could Insure yourself?

I mean, what do you expect?
You are asking them to cover your ***, and open themselves up to potential lawsuits depending on what happens in your trucks...so they are gonna want to know about everything.

Only time I hear from my agent is when it’s renewal time or he is wanting to get paid. Of course we’ve been using him since 1984.

The problem is the new authority, insurance companies set different rules for them the first year. When I originally got mine, it stated I could not hire a driver for a year, I added trucks a few months later and had to get a waiver to do it.
The other problem is most states do not notify the license holder when they suspend their license anymore. It should have shown up on the mvr though.
