    Hello,

I've been reading the boards here for a while and figured I'd sign up. I'm seeking advice regarding schooling. I've been in touch with Roadmaster and Sage. I was torn between tuition reimbursement vs company sponsored. I've decided the tuition reimbursement route. However, I can't afford it and got denied a loan, despite good credit, due to debt/income ratio. Can't get a co-signer.

The only company-sponsored place out here is CR England. I've read nothing but bad about them and really would rather save them as an absolute last resort. (I'm in Salt Lake City by the way) there are others out of state that seem pretty good such as Stevens Transport in Texas. I really don't want to quit my job if I don't have to though.

The director as Sage, which has been who I've been in contact with at the school the entire time told me he could put me on a different program for about half the price. $2000, as opposed to $4000, with about half down. He said it's a shorter course but he still had a few (smaller) companies he could get me hired on with. He said the course is 48 hours and would be part time in the evenings and would take about two weeks. It seemed weird.... What are your thoughts on this?

*Any* help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch in advance for reading.

You are going to learn ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in this so called 48 hr course. Its either a company sponsered training or nothing. You need to find a course that has weeks of schooling. The longer the better.Youre smart for not wanting to go to CRENGLAND.Don't even use them as a last resort because theres a good chance you wont last once school is over then youll have an outstanding school bill to worry about.I heard central reefer is a good company to get your schooling from.Check out there website and give them a call and see what they have to offer.

Yeah, he lost me when he proposed that. 48 hours seems awfully short. Almost sounds like it's just for a CDL-B from what I've read. Regarding CR England, I think I'd rather just go to an out of state company/school than them locally. I'm surprised they are able to stay open with how bad they apparently are. When you say company-sponsored or nothing, is that in general or? Would you recommend that route over getting financing for a school?

actually I would take the colledge route, that's how I obtained my CDL.But this poster says he was denied a loan due to credit issues. So the only choice I would say he has is company training. But deffinately not the 48 hr course.Theres so much you need to know in trucking.

You may want to try brigerland applied tech college in Logan. That's where I got my cdl through and they may have some other options for you.

I trained in 4 weeks at Schneider and that was about right for me. 2 weeks classroom/driving and 2 weeks with my training engineer. 48 hours seems short though. Just beware of any company that makes you team drive with a trainer. Your not doing anything in that drivers seat while your trainer is sleeping except driving for next to nothing in pay.

I am an instructor at CDL School in Tampa, FL (that's the name!). We offer a 40-hour refresher course (5 days). It is intended for those who already have knowledge and skills with trucks, but who do not have the requisite "recent" experience. Basically, it cover the pre-trip inspection (it's a LOT more than checking water, oil, belts, and tires), yard skills (backing), and road skills (safety, manuvering, proper shifting). We do some log book practice, but a week is not a lot of time to teach all these things from square one. Generally, someone who drove a truck years ago will still know how to drive and back up, they just need a little practice to be road ready.

Such a short training course is meant to be a review, not a substitute for full training. Can a person learn enough to meet state criteria and obtain a CDL through a 40-hour course if they have NO experience in a truck and do not know how to back a trailer? A select few can, but they are not the norm. Also, it is important that a newly minted CDL holder get to work quickly and start building on those skills. With a brand-new CDL but no experience or 4-week diploma, there will be challenges to find a driving job.

Having said all that, we have had many students who already drive Class B vehicles do very well with only short course training. These folks are already accustomed to driving large vehicles (usually with air brakes); they generally already know how to shift a 9- or 10-speed (or more) manual transmission; and they understand that these things don't stop like cars. In other words, they already know the basics; they simply need to add backing skills & manuvering a trailer.

Think carefully about why you need a CDL before you select a training course. Best of luck to you in all your endeavors, and stay safe!
