    Hi everyone,

I'm 49 and looking to start my driving career. I'm in Central Texas (Waco area) and I'm seriously looking at driving. Can y'all recommend companies to apply for that would help with getting my Class A CDL. I have my class B but no one is hiring for just a class B. I have a DOT physical that is good until May of this year. I'd like to stay in Texas and do regional work or tankers.

Is there anyone that would hire me on and help me with obtaining my CDL and stay close to home?

Thanks for the links. It looks like I'd need my CDL before signing on with them. I may qualify for training through the local unemployment office. I did have a Stevens recruiter contact me and I'll reach out to them on Monday and see what they have to offer.

Does anyone know who pays for CDL training and the time it takes to go through school. I've seen a few advertised but don't remember who they are. I'll keep looking around this great site. I appreciate all the help.

The best path is to pay the tuition at the school yourself. It's several thousands of dollars.

If you do not, then worse case scenario is youre signing a sort of a light indentured servant to a employer for a term of one year. Then the tuition will go away if you make it that far without being fired, dismissed, killed, hurt etc. If something does happen and you are no longer employed, the entire balance is due and payable pretty much immediately regardless of your unemployment.

FFE & Stevens both have their own cdl school. Contact them and ask if you should attend a private cdl school or their in-house cdl school.

You might want to check out KLLM...from my research they seem to be a pretty good starter company that pays on the higher end for newbs....They have a training facility somewhere in Texas too.

If your in Waco there is a CDL A training company 10min north of you in Elm Mott called ATDS. It’s actually where I trained over a decade ago. Texas will pay for training through WIOA @ the Workforce(unemployment) office, you just have to prove that you can increase your income by becoming a driver. ATDS will take 4 weeks, 1st 2 weeks is just classroom and backing/maneuvers in the yard(they have about 8 trucks with trailers on the pad), last 2 weeks is driving on local roads around Waco preparing for the DPS driving exam.
You can also borrow money @ federal student loan rates to attend because they link into the local community college.

Try CFI. Huge customer there so we are constantly hauling in and out of there. That means it's easy for you to get home, and easy to get a load when you go back to work. I get there once or twice a month and I live in Florida.

We have a Texas regional fleet, the probably go there more often. Check with recruiters on that. We do CDL training in Joplin be we may have a school in Texas too.

    It's worth a call...good luck.
