I have researched pay, benefits and the such, discussed some of this with my recruiter, and Ive done quite a bit of reading on here. Im pretty comfortable with the pay and whatnot.

I have no concerns about my ability to drive a truck either. I have some straight truck experience.. I was a paramedic for 12 years, and the EMS agency I worked with had Freightliner chassis... so im quite comfortable with a high GVW, as well as airbrakes and the such. I know its not the same as driving a tractor/trailer combo, but it was good experience learning how to operate a truck that would normally require a class B, learning what it does and doesn't do, and how it handles.

No, I dont have a CDL either. In florida emergency vehicles are exempt from requiring to have a CDL.

I've had the CDL permit handbook for the past 2 weeks, been studying that, as well as the online school stuff my recruiter sent me. Im planning on going to get my CDL permit next week from the DMV.

I do appreciate you bringing this up though... and thank you for the advice!

Also, can y'all clarify... when i get done with CDL school... do I go back to Florida to take my CDL test and get my full class A?

Does swift provide me with a truck to do this in?

Its been kinda hard getting a hold of my recruiter the past couple of days, she hasn't returned my messages. I know she's busy, so I try not to bug her too much... but I intended on asking her about this stuff.. but I figured I'd hear it from those of y'all who've been there done that!

    Thanks again y'all!

Yes, you go back to Ocala to finish training and testing. Swift will provide you the truck and trailer, pass that then you go to orientation where you will go over some of the same stuff you saw at Millington, do some more paperwork, another whiz quiz, and some more video watching. Do all of the above well and you will get your driver code and then... begin your waiting for the mentor who will allow you to share his truck for 5 or 6 weeks while you do so many backs and drive for at least 240 hours. After you get off of Mentor's truck you will do a road test with a different person to see if you are safe enough to go out solo. At this time you will get your truck, may have to wait a bit again, load it up with your stuff and your rider as long as you have already gotten the ok from Risk Assessment to have the rider along with you. Process takes about a week so have your paperwork in! Have fun and good luck!

Sounds like you're good to go. With your background you should do fine. Try putting your questions in an email to your recruiter. Mine was good about calling back. Eventually. I used the email as a bs meter as well. What wasn't answered in writing I took with a large grain of salt.

Once you are assigned our own truck, are you allowed to take it home with you during hometime? Or do they require it be stored at a terminal or drop yard?

awesome.. thank you guys for all your help. As I said before.. its nice to have an idea of how things go down from y'all who have been through it already.

Recruiters jobs are to... well... recruit... so I know they sometimes trump things up a lil.

Im really looking forward to getting out there with y'all!

Depends on where you live miles wise from the terminal...mine goes to my house every day actually, but only spends the night there every other weekend. Depends also on your DM. It's confusing because each terminal has its' own rules. And don't forget the kicker, off for 3 days and you lose the truck.

Actually, it's off for more than 3 days.
I generally take 3 full days off after being out for around 4 weeks.

I have a safe place to park the truck so it is not a problem taking the truck home, when I haven't put it in the shop for repairs that is.
