Hello everyone, I am just starting my adventure into the Truck driving world and have a few questions.

First, About how long should I study before I take the CDL written test? I have been reading the book and trying to absorb as much as I can but wasn't sure on how long I should wait. Would two weeks of studying be good or two short?

I only ask because I have a job now and will have to quit before I can go to CDL school and just trying to get a time frame on everything.

Second question is, Are there any good options for financing for the school? I have okay credit and can probably get a personal loan from somewhere but wasn't sure if there was a good bank or place to check out that works with people for this type of thing?

That is all I have for now I am sure I will come up with more as I progress but any help, advice, or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

It all depends on how fast you learn things. I had to study and practice for days, my wife read it once and knew it cold.

Find some practice tests online and keep taking them until you get 100%.

Study until you are comfortable with what you are learning.

As far as schooling, you can also go through company sponsored schooling and not have to spend any money up front. You will have to sign like a year contract with the company but personally I would rather be on the hook with a trucking company than a bank. Pretty much boils down to your personal situation.

Theres so many different cdl practice tests online, i use 3 different sites cristcdl, trucker country, and truckers forum cdl test, pretty all the same just worded different which is what i wanted. And as for cdl school like chompi stated there are plenty of schools or the trucking company thats trains at there own places, C1/drivers solution trains no cost but you either work for Pam or USA and sign 1 year contract, Stevens trains at their head quarters in Dallas, Roehl pronounced (rail)trains at there headquarters also, just search and decide what suites you the best. Good luck to you, im going this week to test for my cdl permit.

Try to really study the parts that mention numbers. Most of it is common sense except for knowing the correct numbers for various things (how many seconds following distance, how much weight per tandom, how much pressure before warnings, etc.). Really become an expert on the air brakes test, it is very tough the other two were easy. It was a full room of people at the DMV taking that test and almost everyone failed the air brakes test lol.

At my dmv air brakes 25 questions, but i do have a trick i use when asked when pressing service brake whats max psi loss 4 in combonation and service brake not heing applied is 3 psi, so how i remember it pedal high means low number and service brake applied means pedal is low so psi 4, so basically service brake high means low psi and service brake loe at being applied means high psi 4.

You really ought to study for at least a minimum of 27 years.

Then get into something else, like plumbing.

Seriously, study for about 15 minutes at a time, and take maybe an hour break. DO this for about 4 "study periods", then do it again the next day. So you are looking at about 1 hour total for the day of studying.

The brain will absorb more that way. If you cram too much studying at one time, you will probably only remember page one and maybe the last page, as everything else will be a big blur.

Think of it this way, when you are watching either a movie or tv show.

You watch all the names on the screen, of the stars..right..??

Do you remember all the stars, or the last one??

I personally remember only the first and last, especially when it says, "special guest star", THAT I will remember, the "special" part, as that stands out more than the first star's name.

Just a quick update I have been so busy finishing up at my old job and getting schooling squared away that I haven't been able to study as much as I would have liked. I was finally able to study pretty much every night this week and took my CDL general knowledge, Combination vehicle, and Air brakes today and passed all three on my first attempt. I start school on the 9th and only have to pass my hazmat test once the background check pans out.

Keep in mind that its not rocket science and unless you have a learning disability you should do just fine.

    Good luck man...
