That was very informative, gt91. Thank you for writing that. I have a couple of questions for you. First, criminal history is clean, with exception of one speeding ticket the mvr is clean, and the employment history is decent. I'm on my 2nd driving job now, been here 2years and change, and spent 5 years at the first one. My only concern will be verifying some of my other jobs on my résumé. Do you know if the verification process is beyond just a phone call, like will I have to provide a bunch of w2s and such? That may be difficult for me.
Also, do they frown heavily upon unemployment claims? I know a lot of companies do but in LTL it is something that comes with the territory so maybe it is different.
Another question is do they tend to hire managers from within the trucking ranks? I have a degree and some management experience, and although I am content to be a career driver I wonder if that is an angle that I could play to help me get in the door. Some companies prefer drivers to have little aspirations. But some may value that stuff.

    Thanks

One speeding ticket shouldn't be a problem. I believe I was in same position when hired on. As far as work history they wanted more than just a phone call to verify employment dates. This actually was a problem for me because my former employers policy wouldn't allow them to do more than that. I think ABF was looking for more of a reference. My experience was years ago so some policies may have changed.
Only thing I know about advancement is we had one driver a few years back that applied for some sort of management position and didn't even get an interview. I know he had prior experience but not sure to what extent. Its probably different at each location.
I don't think unemployment claims would be a deal breaker, they may just ask for an explanation. I would think they frown on workers comp claims much more.

@ACH11 I stand corrected. I did not realize all of ABF was union. Yeah, you guys at YRC definitively didn't get shafted like us. We got a pay raise, but we lost some of our vacation benefits. They are planning on giving us a fifth week of vacation after like three or four decades of service... Or some other high number. I won't be around that long to see it probably.

@GT91 thanks for the info as well. BTW, how in the hell have you been here for so long and only have two posts? You holding out on us with all that info.

ABF, UPSF, and YRC are known as the big three U's. I only know that ABF was all union was I have a source with the teamsters hence how I normally find out everything going on before everyone else does. Plus my dad was an ex-union carpenter, he left to take over my grand-fathers business, and would only use union carriers to deliver his materials. He started with ABF, then got fed up, went to CF(Consolidated Freightways) until they went under, then was Roadway till the economy hit.

Yea you guys got hit very very bad looks like. I know where your located but at least in your region its fairly cheap to live( to me at least), where I am you would need a 2nd job. Yea I dont plan on being here for 40-50 years like these guys tend to do, i would rather retire so I can enjoy myself for a while, not work till I die

Cost of living where I used to live was super high. My rent was $1,000 a month. I make about $1,000 a week... So it wasnt too bad. Cept for the fact that i had a bunch of pot smoking, hell raising, low life, no good alcoholic neighbours. Too many of them to beat up and you can't shoot them. I just bought a nice house two miles away from the the terminal. It has double the square footage, twin garage and large yard. My mortgage is $850. Best part: sweet sweet silence. And I don't have to hide my beer in a backpack when I come in the house.

My apt where I am now is 575 a month. Going to be 625 for the summer with the A/C. Where I was living 60 miles south it would be way over a 1000. I am a mile from my terminal. Trying to transfer to the terminal by my dads so I don't have to pay rent plus he's never home anyways. Plus I have the option of getting the house when I get married.

My whole block by my apt are all family, the land lords kids and sibling live all in the area, very very quiet though so no conplaints

$575 isn't bad. That is roughly what we paid when we lived in Great Falls Montana. Oddly enough, Reddaway's pay scale reflects the cost of living for all of Montana, Idaho, and parts of Washington. I have no idea how they come up with those rates. I could pretty much live next to the doctors and lawyers with the pay scale in Great Falls. But you gotta live out if a tent or live way out of town in Missoula with that same pay.

I would also love to know what they are gonna do with the YRC drivers out of Butte and Kalispell. I heard those terminals are getting shut down and Reddaway is supposed to take over their accounts.

Speaking of cost of living. I have no idea how those characters from Watkin Sheppard (also based out of Missoula) survive on their pay rate. Those guys start at $.25 CPM and max out where my LTL carrier starts at. They get about the same weekly mileage as us but not the hourly pay when they get detained or have to fuel their trucks. Don't even get me started on CR England or those Swifties. They might as well live in their trucks and share a sleeper with their family.

I hope the OP lands this gig with ABF. He should be making quite a bit more and be home about everyday.

Road_Runner, What did Reddaway start you out at? I wonder why they make you pay 50 bucks a month for your insurance? They insure me and my whole family for free. We aren't union either.

You guys have some cheap rent! I'm embarrassed to say how much we pay. Well here goes, $2200 a month! That's for a 3 bedroom 1.5 bathroom 1500 sq. ft. town home. All electric too. Average electric bill is $150 a month. During the summer it hits $300 sometimes! I'm telling you, California is ridiculous. Now you will find some cheap rent but I dare you to live in those places! Cheapest I have paid in recent years was $1275 in Long Beach. Couldn't wait to tear out of that place!

Holy hell. Yeah. Screw that. With prices like that they better pay your health. Lol. They started me at $15.44/hour and $.39 per mile. They kinda screwed up, cause I was supposed to get probation pay for 90 days at $13.94 and $.3691 per mile (don't ask me about the last two digits. That is how my pay chart has it). But I kinda kept that to myself. Have yet to meet someone who complains about being overpaid.
