Hello everybody,
I hope I'm posting this in the right spot. I have my CDL Class B and last July I added my tanker endorsement and now I'm interested in adding my HazMat endorsement to open more doors.
If it's been less than a year since I added my last endorsement can I just take the Hazmat endorsement test and not the rest of the tests? I thought I read if you want to add an endorsement less than 12 months from renewing your CDL or adding an endorsement you only have to take the one test.
I hope my wording makes sense. Any information would be great.
Thanks!

You don't have to wait. You can go get them all at once, though for hazmat, you have to get fingerprinted and pay for the background check before you get the endorsement.
RustyChops41, tscottme, Klleetrucking and 1 other person Thank this. -
Sorry, I think I worded my post a little funky. What I'm trying to say is if I go to the DMV to add my HazMat endorsement will I have to take the general knowledge, air brakes, tanker tests again?
-
Yes. I did when I added an endorsement I questioned it and was told any time you change your licence you have to take them allRustyChops41 and tscottme Thank this.

Thanks for the reply. Man, that's kind of a bummer. I guess it makes sense though. I was just hoping to not have to take all those tests again haha.
I thought I read somewhere that if it's been less than 12 months since taking all those tests and you were trying to add another endorsement that you would only have to take the test for that specific endorsement, but that could have been completely wrong. -
Don't quote me on this but when I went to take my Hazmat as a challenge, I went before a year after my renewal and I didn't need to retake any cdl test(I can't even remember the last time I took any written test for a renewal for my class 1, I only go in for Hazmat.)I would of remembered if I did. But I did have to pay the full fee for Hazmat/tankers only. And forget to pay the Feds for a background check, or else you won't get your license, separate agency.

So I went by the DMV today and the lady told me that since it's been less than a year since my renewal and adding my tanker endorsement that I should only have to take the Hazmat endorsement test and not the rest of them. If it was over a year I'd have to take them all.
So my next question is, How many questions is the HazMat endorsement test? Do most people pass it first try?Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
Go to Trucker Country dot com. They have every possible question for every endorsement. Free of charge. Other Web sites have most of the questions. I think Hazmat is 30 questions, but if you have read and answered all of them over & over it's no big deal. My advice: read the question AND ONLY READ THE CORRECT ANSWER. The test isn't a discussion or reasoning test, it's multiple-choice and the answer is available. I used to teach test-taking in another field. Read the questions and give them the answer they want.Diesel Dave Thanks this.

Took me 2 tries the first time, and once ever since. Like I mentioned earlier, I have no use for it, but I did took as a challenge.

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/web/eng_pdf/comlhdbk.pdf section 9 is for HazMat. I read through it 3 or 4 times. If it's not in that book they are not supposed to test you on it. The 30 questions somebody else mention sounds about right.
