I have been driving OTR for over a year now after graduating from truck driving school. Stilll working for the same large company that I started with. I am looking to get a local job and wanting some advice and companys to look at. I have a clean record and no violations, tanker/ hazmat/ doubles endorsements but no experience with these. I have pulled only dry van. I prefer hourly pay and home daily. I live in the Charlotte, NC area. I have looked around at the jobs posted everywhere but its a maze out there. Local delivery route? Linehaul? Something to get me home more often. Tired of living in a truck. Any advice or company names would be greatly appreciated. The more details the better. Thanks in advance for your help.

you have your usual lineup of LTL carriers you could check out.UPS,FEDEX,Saia,YRC,Conway.I think JB Hunt runs intermodal out of Charlotte.Schneider may have local routes from their terminal in charlotte.Maybe some local lumber yards or steel plants running flats?

Focus on tanker companies; less work/more money.

    Check Careerbuilder website.

Bulkmatic is a good company with a terminal in Charlotte; very low driver turnover.

Comtrak is a intermodal company with a terminal in Charlotte.

Check Craigslists...I know some say it is crap but there are hidden gems on there.

Good on you - you're probably in a small percentage that make it through the first year. I'm at ODFL, LTL carrier - you can get the hang of doubles pretty quick. Home every night and a paid motel if you're not, or do local P&D. That's my suggestion.

I agree. Craigslist can be a good tool to use in your job search. Just be careful. Don't blindly send out a resume or give out any personal information to a company that won't say who they are. There are so many that will give only a brief description of the job, and then have a link to a generic, on-line application, or they'll want to do a phone interview, or ask to send a resume. Nothing wrong with doing these things if you KNOW who you are sending them to. If the company is reputable, they will tell you, when you call, who they are so you can do a search and check them out, or they will have their name right in the ad so you know who they are.

Example: Here is an actual ad that I probably wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole. The only way to contact them is through a hotmail address.
