I didn't really know if this belonged in the "school" forum or here. Well, someone will move it if it's wrong;)

Say you attend a company school that is States away from your home(where you hope to remain, keep as base). When you get your CDL do they take that into consideration or do you just move your home-base if your are going to be on a run that is nowhere near your home?

    Thanks, denise
PS So I don't have to start another thread, do you get the option of having a non-smoking "trainer" when you are in training and also, when you go out on the job?

    jtrnr1951 Thanks this.

The company will not hire you unless you are currently located near one of their drop lots or terminals. Most companies will try to pair you up with your smoking preferance.......I decided to just take who ever was available when I was done with orientaion.

P.S. If you go to a company school, that might be miles from your home.....but when your done with school, they will assign you to a terminal close to your home. Many companies will only let your park their truck on their property when you take home time, and those companies will only allow you to live so far from one of their terminals or drop lot locations.

P.S. If the school is out of state, you will have to get a permit in that state, and test in that state.......then when you graduate you just switch it back to your state of residency. I have heard some states are banning this practice, but as schools leave a state ( and they lose the tax base, its amazing how flexible once again they become.)

I won't swear by it, but most companies want your cdl from your resident state. So if'n ya go to school yonder in Mississippi, ya get back to Oregon, ya gotz to spend mo' money, switching your license. Maybe, I think, but I could be wrong.
They find you a non smoker if you want one, if they have one.......

Well, I would take what I could get as far as a trainer. Don't want to make waves. But if there is a little "box" to check I would prefer non-smoker;) Well, my brain wanders back and forth on "what is my best shot" but just a minute ago I was thinking of all the benefits of a vocational school. I would have my CDL(hope, hope, hope)and then, have choices on who to go to work for, where, and even where I wanted to live. Not that I would get all I want but have a little more freedom rather than a company school.

A good friend of mine told me to slow down so I think I shall take their advice, relax, and one thing at a time once again. First thing is to pass all the physical "stuff" and won't know about that til after the 12th of Oct.

    Thanks Jt, denise

Most if not all companies will ask you your smoking preferance when pairing trainers. Some companies, but not many also ask you what kinda music you like, and what your habits are. But I live in MN and went to truck driving school in WI. I just had to have my permit before I arrived for school and then once I finished school they sent me back home to test in MN. They have a company they work with there that rents them a single axle f-650 with air brakes and a double axle regular hitch car trailer. Thats what I took my cdl test in an then after I passed they set me up with a trainer a week later.
