The only one? My how pious of you.

Tell me if no one knew of your great charity would you still do it? Or like most are you simply doing it for recognition?

I do not "give" anything in life. I will offer opportunities to earn something.

I do not feel the need to thump my chest or spout nonsense quoted from a piece fiction to enhance my standing.

If I see them out there freezing their butts off, I will offer them a hot burger and fries on my way back out to the interstate, otherwise a can of soup with a plastic spoon and some crackers and a bottled water. No cash.

A lot of the "offramp beggars" with cardboard signs have cars nearby. Just look around. My problem with these "down and outers" is that they all seem to be perfectly happy being bums. Most have encampments close by and get $$, buy booze and just kick back. No worries, no responsibilities. Life's great, right ?

They're especially prevalent in Raleigh, Garner, Durham, Apex, etc. You just don't see them in Cary, because that's a $$$ town. They have rotating shifts. When I was doing C&D hauling from the transfer stations to the Shotwell landfill, I'd keep a cooler full of water with me. On a hot day, I'd offer them water, but never money. Whether they were legit or scammers, they all seemed to appreciate the cold water, anyhow.
I decided to put this to the test once, as I was waiting for our tire person to come and change a steer tire which had blown out in Durham (I was running a roll-off that day). I was wearing an old set of my DCU pants and I had a reflective vest in the truck (panhandlers in Durham are required to wear them), so I took a piece of cardboard out of the can, wrote "Combat vet, any little bit helps" (all of which was true, anyhow). In about 45 minutes of waiting for our tire guy to show up, I managed to take in $12.43, two cigarettes, and an orange.

I bought my daughter's ex-bf (and father of my grandson) a Carhartt jacket before I knew what a BUM he was, so, yes...I've contributed.

(Yes, he's a bum. Less than a hundred bucks from the bum in over two years since my grandson was born, and he spends most of his time in jail. BUM.)

As far as the off-ramp hustlers...no. I make my contributions in more subtle and private ways.

The homeless people I see are usually standing at the end of the off ramp with a sign. I will usually ask them if they are hungry and if they say yes I'll give them some food. I never give them money because many of them will just go buy booze with it.

    No way!

You've got to ask yourself, in your whole life have you ever been in this ("supposed") "situation?"

We're talking your whole life. You've NEVER EVER had to beg for food money.

i'm not talking about getting in trouble, i'm talking about being "homeless" and having to panhandle.

If the answer is no and it should be no, then you don't give.

Very little difference between pious and pompous.. I sincerely hope you are never down and out and encounter only all the other pompous people out there..

As for the original post: charity is good if it goes to a person who actually needs it.. I am grateful God granted me the ability to see through the BS that rarely fails me.. I give when I sense a true need, but rarely cash.

    scottied67 and Powell-Peralta Thank this.
