JoeyJunk and Gearjammin' Penguin Thank this. -
And I have always thought the new body style 680's look incomplete with the painted body and partially painted side skirts with unpainted side skirt panels. Looks like the truck was wrecked and repair panels were just added to get it on the road.Last edited: Jul 19, 2023

.....
kylefitzy and drvrtech77 Thank this. -
Got all 3 pick ups done, easy peasy mac-n-cheesy, then made it north of Montgomery. 5 PODS, 4 little ones 1 big one. Nice and lite.
I have pulled this 53' with my axles spread in and back out of FL (with my permission slip from the FL DOT). Today was the 1st time I was asked for my spread permit. Even though I am not heavy with this load, spreads ride better(and it was a PITA to get these to open to begin with). -
dwells40 Thanks this.

good: lane departure is so quiet you can’t even hear it if the radio is on. It’s also run through its own set of speakers. Enough said.
The automated manual, while kind of slow, does make it an absolute breeze to drive. Just set the cruse for the most part and aim the thing down the road.
Headache rack is decent, not at much space as my last one though. For most of the fleet it’s a huge improvement over the open racks.
slow speed maneuvering, one of my complaints about my last auto, is greatly improved with what they call “urge to move” once you put it in gear and take you’re foot off the brake, it is moving. Very similar to when you let the clutch out at an idle. I’ll be interested to see how it works with a heavy load backing up hill.
The truck is #### quiet, you hardly can hear the engine even under full load.
Not ideal: the collision mitigation is not over bearing. It only really talked to me once in some “heavy” rush hour traffic in green river Wyoming. Both lanes were loaded and I went to pass a truck who hung me out to dry in the left lane after he woke up. I had to slow down and cut in behind him, the lane departure really did not like that.
they ordered the truck with a 5’ fifth wheel slider, it’s mounted way to far forward. All the way back is only slightly behind center of the drives. We “need” the fifth wheel centered over the rear axle on occasion. They may or may not move it for me.
bad: the truck is an absolute dog. My last truck and this truck are both supposed to be 500hp with similar gearing. This truck feels like it’s at least 20% less powerful. I wonder if Wylie didn’t mess with some parameters.
that leads me to my next point, the truck won’t idle between 0 and 100 degrees. That ####ing apu better NEVER give me a bit of trouble. Or it’s hotel time.
speaking of apu, it has an oil leak that has to be fixed when I get home Monday.
three times today when I was just cruising on flat ground with the cruse set on 68 the trucks would down shift two gears, red line the motor, and cancel the cruse. Maybe that’s there way of breaking the motor in.
the adaptive cruse works pretty well, my only complaint is when it needs to apply the brakes, it pulses them very hard. I wonder if it can’t apply light steady pressure. It’s less that ideal.Itsbrokeagain, Lonesome, Old_n_gray and 4 others Thank this. -
As for the truck being a dog, every PACCAR motor I have driven was like that. Feels totally guttless. Did your blue truck have a Cummins? If it did that would explain the difference in pulling power and quietness. PACCAR's are virtually silent compared to a Cummins. And the downshifting sounds like there is something amiss in the software. I have driven other AMT's, but never a PACCAR, none would do that.
Are all the new trucks going to be auto's? Guess that's another reason for me to avoid having to switch trucks....I was hoping to have to retire from open deck because I was too worn out and unable to do it physically before having to leave because of equipment...
As for the idling, they probably need to adjust the idle temps, both the trucks I've had here would idle when it was over the low to mid 90's. The KW would shut down under that, even if you parked with just the trailer brakes set and truck brakes released. This one will idle all day long with the truck brakes relesed no matter what temp it is outside.
The adaptive cruise on the KW I had would adapt long before it needed to use the brakes...it would be so subtle slowing down to match the speed of the vehicle in front of me, you wouldn't even realize you were going slow. Sounds like the new system has it's own issues to be resolved. I say they scrap the whole system and use the same system we used before that technology ever existed(by that I mean a driver who pays attention and adapts their speed to the surrounding traffic flow)
As far as the 5th wheel placement, that may be an issue when it comes to pulling an RGN. I wonder how many cross members will get damaged by a RGN kingpin before they either put 5th wheel ramps on or move the slide back.JoeyJunk, dwells40, Gearjammin' Penguin and 1 other person Thank this. -
The new safety lady who does logs and I are going to have to have a discussion. When my truck was at the dealer getting mostly fixed, I signed off the Peoplenet. There were several 'unassigned' driver time entries from the mechanic moving it that I rejected. One entry keeps getting edited and I have re-rejected 3x, and noted it on the entry each time that it was not me, and also referenced my driver login many hours later was when I took possession of the repaired vehicle. Get the hint lady...I will keep rejecting it, and noting it on each time it gets changed.
JoeyJunk Thanks this. -
