My daughter's oldest son was driving his dad's 1500 RAM, and learned to back a trailer before he was out of elementary school. Over the summer they were on the river fishing, and right in front of a bunch of people, my son-in-law tossed him the keys to the truck and told him to back the truck and boat trailer down the ramp while he stowed their gear so they could load the boat and head home. The other drivers stood there with their mouths open watching this little kid back down a long ramp and lined it up perfectly so they could just drive the boat on the trailer, and just pull out to secure it. He did it in one try. We teach them right at an early age down here...at least out here in the country...around the big cities, it's way different.

    I'm glad you didn't use the "F" word on my thread...that's a no-no :biggrin_25512:

..I would still pay attention to how he did it, just in case next time it's my turn to haul such things. That's why I'm glad I haven't pissed of @kylefitzy enough to be ignored...he has hauled way more odd stuff over the years and has advise on how to, or how not to secure it.

We haul some oddball stuff here, no one has hauled everything. I’ve hauled a couple of load of tank heads out of socal before. Not bad loads, we usually don’t tarp them. They can be a pain to keep your edge protectors in place because they usually stack several Different sizes together.

I had to chuckle a little under my breath....he asked my opinion of if I thought the way he did it would hold...an experienced OD and wing guy asking this rookie's opinion on if it looked right...:biggrin_2559:

He called me from the GA/FL line and they hadn't fallen off yet, so I guess he did it right.

I really dislike some of the lazy ####s I work with. This is the second trailer in a row that’s had tons of extra gear left on it. Last trailer had probably 3-400 pounds of chains, binders, hand ratchets, and triangle chain ends that I had to strip out at the yard to get to 80,200.

this one had 10 chains, 9 binders, and a full set of bungees. I can almost guarantee they picked up a preloaded/secured load at they yard in WA and they just hooked and booked instead of leaving the equivalent gear off their truck. They get to the other end and pile it on the deck, hiding under a stack of carpet. Now I have to move the #### so i can load on Monday.

this is why the local drivers are bringing in loads and taking all their gear off, causing more work for everyone. Otr drivers aren’t leaving equipment.

what I wouldn’t do to have an assigned trailer. IMG_5879.jpeg

Gawd that would be an improvement, I'm with ya on marrying my truck to a trailer...except I would have a hard time deciding which type trailer to pull. I like the flexibility of a step to pull equipment, but would hate to miss out on loads that only take a full flat deck, but the new flats have a storage box and a tire carrier so your spare doesn't have to take up deck space....and a positive of an RGN over the other two would mean no more elevator loads, but those suckers are heavy.

Since you do so many super sized sea-can loads, would you rather have an RGN or one of the others?

I need an intervention, I have an addiction I can't break. It's not booze, food or drugs, it's running my arse off. After that last milti-stop tarp load that I had my hissy fit about, I told my travel agent I was gonna stop push myself and stop running hard. The day or so after I turned my post-fit 700 mile day. Then there is this load. Left St. Pete Friday morning. If I push, I can deliver this sucker near Pasco, WA by noon on Tuesday. I can't help myself...I am like the donkey on the Little Rascals following the carrot...

We all have our “#### this #### days”. I think we are similar though, if there’s time left on the clock I’m going to try to use it, usually.

as for what type of trailer I would like to pull full time, It would be a DST. That’s a stretch RGN for all the non-SPD folks following along. That’s what a mainly pull anyway. Last year, maybe two years ago, I stayed hooked to the same dst for 6 weeks+. Big cans west and ltl freight back east. Worked just fine for me.
