Not only do the hooks get in the way, these stupid rounded corner square spools are a PITA when needing to take the last little bit of slack out of the chains.

An example in our world would be going on duty any time dispatch calls - even if it invalidates a 10 or 34 hour break.Lonesome, Gearjammin' Penguin and dwells40 Thank this. -

I am about to step on some toes and stir up a hornets nest, but when has that ever stopped me from opening my mouth...That's why I have a bitter attitude about labor unions in this day and age. They're extortionists, and are like spoiled children on an airplane. If they don't get their way they will do everything they can to make everyone elses life around them as miserable as possible by throwing a tantrum until they get what they want. Don't get me wrong, back in the day, when unions were 1st started, they did a lot of good, but what they have morphed into is nothing more than legal organized crime. Every time I hear about the union members in the auto industry losing their jobs and plant closing, I chuckle because they went on strike for so long a while back to get way more pay and 'guarantees' than they deserve forcing the car companies to #### near shut down right after the Covid slowdown...then the car companies gave in and gave the brats a lot of what they wanted, then turned around and started closing plants and firing workers...
With the border people, aren't they government employees? I am surprised the Canadian government isn't up there with their reserve military taking over the border agents jobs and booting them to the curb. -
Think I heard border agents were essential so a lot of them would still he working through the strike. Think I heard it on landline now but cant remember where i heard it for sure

Thats also why you move to a right to work state. You can't be forced to join the union even if the company has one

Apparently money doesn't talk on the USA/Canadian border then? In the 'old days' in Europe before the single market and all those border/customs posts suddenly became empty, we used to have a special float to move between states. It worked fine as long as you were aware of exactly which border you could do it at and which you definitely couldn't. Entering Italy was almost impossible without a treat for the officials. France less so but possible as long as you picked your target carefully.
When my soon to be wife travelled with me she was known as my customs girl. Before entering Italy I would pull over and 'go to bed' in the bunk. She would already be prepared in her miniskirt and tight figure hugging white sweater and would slide behind the wheel and drive into the post. Descending from the cab with 'her' papers and aware of the effect she was having she presented them inside as if she was the driver. The Italians were falling over each other to stamp her documents and urge each other out of the way so she could proceed as fast as possible. My friend Richard was once following us in the next truck and became very grumpy about his treatment and the argy bargy about whether or not the financial encouragement was sufficient.
But I once crossed from Switzerland into Austria and there was a tax to pay. It was calculated by the weight of your truck multiplied by the number of kms in Austria before arriving at the German border, multiplied by whatever the number they first thought of that day. Smart arse here, stupidly ignoring the rule that you don't mess with Germanics feigned ignorance and declared the weight of the load, shoes, which was considerably less than the plated gross weight of the truck. Not only that but I foolishly stuck to my guns as the man behind the counter, who was only minus a silly moustache to separate himself from an earlier compatriate who had caused a certain amount of trouble in Europe back in '39. But he certainly made up for it with the rapidly rising manic scream in his voice. I gave in, but he wasn't calming down now and demanded the registration document of the truck to confirm the plated weight. When produced he wouldn't accept it as genuine because he had never seen a British one before and didn't believe it. Of course he hadn't, he had never asked for one before because no other drivers had been foolish enough to upset him. I only eventually got through after several other Brits, anxious to get the ever lengthening queue moving, showed him their own logbooks.
I had other problems elsewhere from time to time and even was in a long queue once because a load of Dutch drivers, fed up with being searched everytime they entered Switzerland to reveal all the cigarettes they were known to smuggle, blockaded the border completely. It was settled one way or another in a few hours but we were part of the tailback into a mountain tunnel and with engines running to keep warm in those pre night heater days, were rapidly running out of air to breathe. Also we had tickets to see Johnny Mathis at the Nottingham Playhouse and were anxious to get home. We made it with only moments, and oxygen, to spare. -
