Rolling out of Houston, everything was going fine until the Sam Houston statue in Huntsville...then everything came to a stop. By what was said on the radio, a container with hazmat rolled over in the ditch, so they had to close the road northbound. I jumped off and went north on the frontage road and got back on just past the crash.

I have seen a half dozen JB Hunt trailers being pulled by the 579 semi-autonomus truck fleet...which leads me to a question. In situations like the road being closed because of a wreck or weather, once these semi-autonomus trucks become fully autonomous (as in no driver at all), how do you program a truck to go out and around when there is a bypass route set up to relieve traffic backups?

Why would it need to? No hos or food or bathroom needed, just shut engine off and wait for road to reopen. Otherwise probably pings home-base and gets a new routing. Or monitors traffic flow and constantly updates best route.

Until all roads are approved for the trucks they may handle it the way oversize and long doubles do. We just pull up to the road closure, explain to them we won’t take the detour route. Usually they let us past the cones and we wait until the road is open or they want to let us by.

    dwells40 Thanks this.

I tied a rope to the front eyelet on the tarp and climbed my ladder and pulled it up and over the front post, then tied a glass knot to hold it, then got out my PVC pipe with the round end and lifted the back part up and over because there wasn't enough room between the boom lift and my back freight to put my ladder...

This is my PVC setup PXL_20221031_231038411.MP.jpg

The round end unscrews and I have a "T" with a slot cut in it to feed straps thru long pallets or if pallets get double stacked before they put them on the trailer and I want a belly strap on a lower level

It’s largely dependent on the level of automation, if fully automated the truck should be capable of determining if an alternate route is truck legal and faster, or it would simply wait.

In anycase the truck would be monitored so an override instruction set could be issued. I think it’s interesting they are experimenting with automated trucks, but honestly the technology is still fairly far away. It’s one thing to fly a spacecraft to the International Space Station, but co-existing with john and jane public, well that’s another matter all together.

Nice, I have a converted painters pole that extends to help me pull chains through reels or belly strap. I don’t do the types of tarpping you guys get up to enough to worry, though I may buy a set of hybrid tarps next year just to be more flexible.

Watching the lanes to see how things shake out.

Can't wait until the first one gets hijacked. Will be like the old Knightrider show when the bad guys tried to steal Kitt...
