Ohhhhhh darn, I'm gonna miss another winter event...darn....well, I guess I'll watch it from my screened in porch in my shorts while I am grilling my wife a Mothers Day steak down in paradise(casa de snackbar in FL)...and watching to see if we're going to get a little rain from a potential May hurricane.

actually goes a little deeper than that, as Mrs Johnson's family owned land in the area of coopers cove.... and she used her highway beautification agenda to help get I 80 put through the area, that all the locals said you are crazy, and even the Union Pacific went around.

That story was debunked long ago. The route was planned long before Mrs Johnson was ever First Lady. The route was planned in 1959. I looked it up too, and saw its not true.

okay, all though I actually knew the people, and the families, that lobbied for the route, so they could sell their usesless oil field land to the federal government for the highway. And yes they were related to Mrs. Johnson. But you can believe what ever you want, the locals here know the truth.

The route was planned in 1959. The reason it runs through the mountains as opposed to through Medicine Bow was because it saved 19 miles, saving transportation "billions". Mrs Johnson wasn't First Lady until 1963, and her "beautification program" didn't pass until 1964, 5 years later.

same reason 80 went thru the hills of iowa rather than flatter northern route .

the route was planned in 1959, changed in 1962, changed again in 1964, and again in 1966 to the route we have today. it opened on oct. 3 1970. With anything the federal government does, follow the money. Notice the date of the final route decision, and when the bids to build were let out.

Yes the "excuse" of it is 19 miles shorter is used to justify it, but the actual reason as with anything politicians do, is follow the money.

Sorry Joseph, I grew up in the area, went to school with the kids that benefited from the route, my grandfather surveyed the routes. The truth tarnishes the image of Lady bird Johnson, so of course it is discredited.

But you can continue to believe it is because of the 19 miles shorter distance. Sounds believable, sounds like a reason the federal government would do it, but it is not the WHOLE truth.

Don't really have much use for the government, but I looked into the theory. I'm not going to get into a pissing match over it. At the end of the day, whether it was her or some other federal entity, the fact is that the federal government made a giant mistake and wouldn't let go of it, and this is the end result.
