My hubby and I are leaving the medical field (respiratory therapist/nurse) to be truckers. We are tired of the hospital and are currently in CDL school. Needless to say, neither of our families approves of our decision to be team truckers. We don't really care, but it did hurt a little bit when we told them and seeing their frowns.. saying we wouldn't make it a year...that we will be miserable. They are confused as to why we would leave our profession to be OTR truckers. We tried to explain that the hospital/medical field isn't all the glamorous wonderful rainbows and riches that everyone seems to think it is. It is hard and nasty work, dealing with sick people isn't fun. We don't really enjoy it anymore.

We don't need their approval, but it feels like they are looking down on us now. Why can't they still be proud of us being truckers? That's just not right. We're still the same people no matter what we are doing for a living.

Does any of your family look down on you for trucking?

None of mine do, but it was my lives ambition from my early teens so they are not surprised. I took quite a few years off the road but eventually came back. Once the diesel gets in your blood.

I honestly would not give it a second thought if they did. They do what makes them happy, I do what makes me happy.

If you were my daughter, I would be frowning too. OTR isn't all glamorous wonderful rainbows and riches either. But good luck.

I have a BS degree in Accounting and did accounting for 13 years and Cobol computer programming for 3 years. All of my relatives told me not to do it but a friend of my father’s told me that his son was making $50 to $60K driving that sounded like good money to me and I wanted to do it. This friend told me that he did not like his son doing it and that I should not look into it either.

Sure, it seems most families don't approve. Same here, majority of my relatives and immediate family have degrees and a few have doctorates. Mother, sister, brother-in-law, masters or doctorates. I dropped out of college Peabody/Vanderbilt, joined the Navy, when that was over , became long haul trucker. Never cared for even one second what anyone else thought. Many thought it was a disgrace when I sold everything and relocated to Las Vegas/Henderson and China, now I'm a resident of Nevada and China; but I don't care what anyone else thinks & neither should you or your husband.

I'm not a current driver anymore but I'm going back on the road this March. I'd like to tell you what I tell anyone that complains about or hates their job. (People spend most of their life working. Every morning when people wake up they should look forward to going to work ever day. When they stop enjoying their work its time to recess their place in life and follow a new path. Job happiness is one of few keys to success). I will support you and your hubby if no one else will.

I left my previous field for trucking and I get static from my mother about it. I don't think it is so much looking down on trucking in my case. My uncle has been a trucker for most of my lifespan. Mom doesn't get along with him all the time. I think her disdain has more to do with that than any objection to women driving trucks. I'm also still local for the next several days, at least. She hasn't had to deal with thinking of me driving OTR even though I spent Summers with my uncle doing exactly that several times. Times were wilder back then, too.

My g/f at the time I got my CDL wasn't too happy about it. We had just had a son and I needed to make enough money to support us, IE get an apartment, food, vehicles, etc. I asked her if she knew of another job that I could get trained for in 3 weeks and make 50k+ a year after I was working in the field for a year (or less in some cases.) She still had her reservations. Needless to say, 1 year after I got my CDL we were no longer together. :p
