I have brand new mc , had been leased on to pottles now bision mc for past 2 years as oo before they got bought out was a great company and had steady freight and getting 71% of load wasn't horrible... Now that I finally made the move and got my own mc to pull there freight as a " preferred carrier" there offering me an entire 74% of the load ........ I no I could survive on that but a broker taking 26% of load is a much bigger cut than I've ever heard of .....

That all being said are there any reputable brokers that run the northeast for lanes ? I live in northern Maine but have family in east pa as well but willing to run any where that the numbers make sense

    Thanks for any recommendations

You are in for an unpleasant surprise my friend, you gonna have very rough next few months. Not only you chose the slowest time of the year to start running on your own, majority of brokers would not want to work with you until your MC is 3-6-12 months old and you get a roadside inspection.
Also nobody in the right mind will give you the contacts where people get their work from.
On a positive note if you survive 6 months, you should be fine going forward

You made such a large leap of faith without knowing what you were going to bring in for revenue. Crazy.

The preferred carriers I talked to under pottles contact were at 85% still rough but more than covered cost of insurance however now that it's bision it's a per mile rate they are offering and % just doesn't make much sense compared to where I was at

I'll alowies survive lol n yes I was expecting rough few months , 2 reasons I made the jump was because I new even if it sucked bision has enough freight to keep me moving to that 6 month mark ..... And pottles went from great family owned company to corporate when they sold .... I can just feel the bs corporate rules being written lol

That's rough. Spot freight is really bad right now the volume and the rates are very low. No broker in his right mind has any incentive to pay more than what he can get on a particular lane. Or, "market rate" as they like to call it. Not a good time be running your own numbers.

So you went out and got your own authority without figuring out who your target customers/revenue will be beyond "my ex employer will keep me busy" is that about right? You realize they aren't obligated to pay you 74%, or 85%, or load you at all. You realize you are now in direct competition with them now, don't you? This so called list of "preferred carriers" - answer me what happens when say Bison used to have 10 loads a week from their customer and now they only move 3. Which "preferred carrier" do they hire? Do they put it on their own truck? Seniority driven? Price driven? What now? How else are you going to bring dollars through the front door is this plan fails?

On the plus side, I'd agree with the above, if you survive the next 6-12 months (nobody knows) you will likely be fine. Trucking in general is going thru a very deep recession.

Just for a math example, my carrier takes 26% of the linehaul. I'm doing OK.

    Oldie, but a goodie - "50% of $100 is better than 80% of $50"

Are they required to pay a certain % no .... Did I get bad info from contracts that were grandfather... Probably

Do I have another broker that I had been in talks with prior to getting my own mc as a back up , yes

Do I have good 2 + year working relationship with back up broker knowing that they can keep steady income and freight like I do with bision .... No that's why they were a back up

Can I survive the extra exp vs song and dance I was initially told before getting my own number with bision alone yes , will I give them a chance before claiming the world is ending and I'm fin ruined no problem

Am I seeing what else is out there in the mean time yep that's why I'm asking the forum

And for your the later comment if bision loses freight on a lane I run , yes preferred carriers will b first to b cut .... N if all my other broker options fail ..... I'll just jump back into my second truck that's under bisions MC and jump back up the line of who's getting freight cut from them lol

As my dad alowies said "belts and suspenders " have a back up to ur back to your backup plan ..... Probably none of them will go perfect anyway lol

Very true , that's why I know I can survive the next 6 month min even with the ####ty spot market

All it takes is finding that one back bone lane / client to make a thriving business
