I have glanced over the regs but can't find anything stating specifically when you have to do it. Obviously before your trip but can it be hours before? Can you do it at the end of the day when your park the truck so you can roll first thing the next morning?
Any law on when you have to do your pre trip?

If someone pull your pin while you were sleeping, it will be still your fault if you drop your trailer for not doing a pretrip inspection.
Do it once you're ready and start your log. The regs doesn't state how long it has to be, 1 min or 15 mins.TBonze and Snailexpress Thank this. -
You can do your pre and post any time you want. There's no law on what time. Only that it has to be done.
Course, if your smart and safe. You pre right before takeoff and post right after parking.Called common sense.
A thorough pre is always a good idea. Cuz truckers like to vandalize or play games. Not often but it DOES happen.
Last week. I watched 2 trailers that were sitting together. Both roll out of the truckstop. At different times. Both missing every light in the back.Last edited: Jan 19, 2016

I was thinking more along the lines of if I wanted to do a more thorough pre trip checking all the fluids, belts, tires with a gauge, etc. if I could spend 30 minutes or so doing all that in the evening so that it is not eating into my 14 on the next day.
Right or wrong I do a quick pre trip every day thumping tires, checking lights, kingpin, obvious leaks and then about every third day a do a lot more thorough job. -

Then Wouldn't it be called a "Whenever the hell you wanna ~ Inspection"
?? Designated pre and post to eliminate confusionRustyBolt Thanks this. -
You have 14 work hours. Only so many can be for driving.... You have extra. I am not sure why you wouldn't want to be safe on the road every time regardless of the time it takes to do so.
ANYTHING can happen overnight. And you only have one life. I would protect it if I were you. -
MrEd, RustyBolt and GreenMonster9669 Thank this.
