All of you guys with Volvo motors and the I-shift tell me what year engine/truck is and what issues you have been having. I have vnl780 with the isx and no issues with the drivetrain what so ever. Not to mention few clutch replacements due to a lot of heavy and short loads.
2009 780 D13, Ishift...... Bought in April 2014, with 598k on the od... Have 630k now. Wiring harness between tranny and computer went out in first 500 miles. The repair was paid for by the dealer I bought it from. Had my radiator, surge tank, and ride leveling valve go out around 615k, and just got my A/C fan motor replaced yesterday. Also chased a weird vibration in the front end for 20k miles, which was finally solved with centramatics...... So far, still loving my truck...
Volvo D12 870,000 on her, still on original clutch, one pair of EGR valves, front radiator, cam sensor aka speed sensor, I forgot about three ride height unit assemblies these are poorly made pice of junk. had the ECM flash about a year ago still getting 7.5 to 8.8 for milage. the best truck ever owned The APU is different story !
I had an Eaton 13sp in my 06 VNL780 and liked it a lot, but the iShift blows this away. I can't see any reason in shift gears manually when an automatic can do it much better. Driving in dense traffic with a heavy load is a breeze with the iShift. Plus, the trani appears to save weight, as the clearances required for manual shift linkages aren't needed. The clutch protection system ensures a long life clutch.
How much more does the D13/i-shift cost on a new truck vs. D13/13spd? Somebody mentioned earlier the 13 speed is less but the warranty costs more? How do the numbers break down on that?
As far as I know the ishift and warranty are standard now. You have to order a manual and you only get a very small credit like $1500 and no extended TRANS warranty.
We drove avg 3000 per week, Kw t660 CUMMINS ISX for 2 years, avg 6.4mpg. at those rate for the volvo, we would save approx 100g per week, at say $3.00/g , $300 a week. $300X4.3weeks=$1290 In a month we would save nearly enough for a truck payment every month ( assuming we do 3000 miles every week) looks really good if you drive hard for your first year as owner
The new ishifts my company is getting have the shift control moved to the dashboard just below the stereo head unit. I'm due to move into one of the trucks soon, so it'll be interesting. I used to have the mindset that "real truckers use manual trannys", but that's been for the last 10 years since my last auto. (And that was a '05 Columbia with the gutless Mercedes MBE 4000 and zf meritor auto, I'm sure by now the technology has improved ).
They move them to the desh because fattly was using it as a crutch to get out of the seat and breaking them off !!
