I agree, its something you want to get. Just dont get it when you get your permit. Get it after you pass your CDL test.
are trucking schools worth it?

I also have a passport. Maybe consider getting a passport or passport card. A passport card is ok if you don't plan on traveling overseas and can use it for crossing into Canada. I've hauled lots of loads into Canada and never had an issue, except one time. Was hauling a huge boiler for a school in Burnaby, Canada. The trailer was a spread axle. The Canadian clown was screaming and jumping up and down about how spread axle trailers aren't allowed in that part of Canada. The company had to pay a $150.00 fine before I could proceed. He was also screaming almost non-stop at all the American drivers. Never had an issue at any other crossing into Canada.

When I was deciding about CDL school my options were pay $600-800 and get on an 8 month waiting list for the community college class or move back home, take out a loan for $3500 & start CDL school on Monday & starting earning 4 weeks later. I would have spent more than the difference in the tuition costs in living expense waiting for the community college option. I was going to be homeless in 2 weeks. I chose to borrow & repay the $3500 rather than $600-800. YMMV
