No manual will get better fuel mileage then the newer autos.. Period.
There is a reason why fleets are going to them and it has everything to do with reducing fuel costs..

{and I'm ok with that.... LOL} -
Someone needs to build a bridge....and get over it. Even if an AMT does perform what do you care, you like manual transmissions better and that's fine...

Who's gonna win the next race, Hamilton or Rosberg? Who cares, just follow the leader to the next corner and try not to break anything.Bean Jr. and MidWest_MacDaddy Thank this. -

I enjoy tech which is one of the reasons I follow F1, but the hybrid era can go as far as I'm concerned, but I know as an European sport it's here to stay. -
I've driven out freight liners and T680 2016 and 2017 autos and they are very nice to drive. There is no lag, no hunting for gears and smooth as butter in traffic. The only thing I absolutely cannot stand is when backing to a dock it takes some finesse to bump a dock smoothly.
Fuel bonuses have gone up across the fleet for everyone that has switched to autos..RustyChops41 and Winnyf1 Thank this. -
Some people claim to be more fatigued working the clutch with their left foot, my contention is in stop and go traffic it forces you to overwork your right foot compared to a manual that one can set in a specific gear and relax both feet.
Now overall, the AMT was less fatiguing to me during the overall day due to no need to downshift/upshift in rolling hills situations or climbing or descending steep grades. Dang thing just about killed itself trying to maintain speed. On the downhills, it went quite a bit faster than I would ever try with a manual due to fear of not being able to downshift on the downhill. The auto computer knows what it is good for and that should be enough cause for concern for any professional driver; computers are known to fail sometimes.
Personally overall I don't like the concept of putting my life in the hands of some computer to choose which gear to be in on that 6% downhill grade.
Another thing I'm thinking of, one time I backed up to a dock sitting on a layer of 6inches of snow. Got unloaded and couldn't get off the dock very easy. Put 'er in gear and wheels just spin and spin. Could get out of the truck and walk around, truck ain't going nowhere. I have heard with an AMT, the wheels will not even spin in such situations. In my case I was able to spin back and forth and break free. AMT would probably still be there today.Toomanybikes and rank Thank this.
