Mack transmissions are tough, but they’re not as forgiving in a lot of ways as others as a result. The older ones it didn’t matter what engine you had from a 237 to a V8, it came with the same transmissions and rear ends. The triplex and quaduplex’s did obviously, but a few of the others would give you multiple reverse gears. The one you mentioned, 6spd and 12spd’s all would anyway.

My dad drove an old R model straight truck with a vac tank, it had that 6 speed. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world when he was backing up a road or driveway banging gears in reverse lol

You got it! Mid 90s L Model. 379s have a better turn radius than my W9 though. It's not just the exhaust issues with these trucks though. The cab is more narrow than the berth. I think that's a huge part of the problem too.
