NYC is only bad if you make it bad. Unless you're going into Manhattan, which most of you won't. NYC and Long Island are pretty easy, just a lot of traffic. If you'll go to Chicago or Los Angeles, you'll have NYC licked.

Yeah it's fun Chicago is another city where you have to watch your overhead bridge heights i used to always look in my Rand Mc Nelly atlas for all the bridge warnings.

I grew up only about 80 miles west of New York City, took my first ever trip into NYC driving a tow truck, then I did some commuter bus runs into the Port Authority Bus Terminal, finally when I started driving tractor trailer, my first ever run in a tractor trailer was with a car hauler into the Bronx. Spent 9 years doing local pickup and delivery of cars in the 5 boros, Long Island, and north Jersey. NYC is not as bad as Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, or most other areas just west of the Hudson River. That said, I am glad I only go to NYC in my personal vehicle for family trips, haven't been there in a commercial vehicle is almost 5 years and plan on keeping it that way!

As for bridge clearances, there are really only two things you need to know in New York State, 1) Keep off the parkways, and 2) NY law requires all bridges to be posted at 12 inches lower than actual clearance and this is true unless the sign says "actual clearance", which usually happens after road repairs. However according to NY vehicle and traffic law section 385, if you hit the bridge and you are higher than the posted height or 13 foot, whichever is less, under NY law you are responsible for any damage to the bridge.

The company I work for, is non forced dispatch into New York City. I like accepting the City loads when I have a student, the students are fun to watch when you approach a bridge marked lower than 13'6. I always drive into the city with my students, just to show them, that it's not as bad as most drivers think. I then give them the opportunity to drive back out, but most decline.

Not true if I read what your saying correctly. Those 2 signs are always the same. The white sign is the posted height 1' lower and the yellow sign is a warning.i drive down there everyday. If it says ''actual height'' then it is.But everything is 1' higher than posted except i believe tunnels.I take the Lincoln Tunnel home w/ a 13' 48', I just drop the air in the tractor and it gets me under the beam or whatever they use,the trailer is usually a couple inches lower anyways.Once in the tunnel air up the tractor and I have about 3'' of clearance.Cops never even bat an eye.

1st time across the cross bronx with a 13'2 I stayed in the middle lane the whole time. Too nervous to even realize 13'6s were riding to the right of me. One time in the bronx i had to drive under the el a few blocks in the wrong lane to make a delivery.....fun times

As someone who has driven just about every road in Chicago that makes me feel better. Before GPS I'd be driving down a road for miles and then all of a sudden they change weight restrictions. Screw it! Take a right and keep going until the next main road and take that up. The concrete semi truck I drove was the best. You could drive down any street and it was only 12' high with a 26' trailer. Many blind side alley to driveway jobs in Chicago.
