I'm in CA and will be purchasing a truck in another state (not sure which one yet, let's say either IA or TX)
How do sales taxes work in these cases?
Thank you !

In the old days, when buying a car out of state (Ca) and bringing it back to Ca. to register etc, Ca. charged you, the buyer, a "use tax" basically sales tax with different wording. This was 40 years ago, so I.m not sure what the rules are today. But I'm sure Ca. will get their fair share. You will not have to pay sales tax in both states.

In Missouri, you pay sales tax when you register the vehicle.
We have an exemption if you have a DOT number.
I would think you’ll tackle taxes when it comes time to register.Sons Hero Thanks this. -
You pay your states sales tax because that's the state your registration will be in.. also some states like mine "Tennessee" don't charge sales tax if your lease to a company

I thought if you have interstate authority you don’t have to pay sales tax?

I paid taxes in Iowa, where I bought it. Indiana didn't charge me any due to me leasing on my truck.
