I think the only thing affecting your ability to pull a reefer trailer in cali is the air standards laws.
You should be able to find your answer in the link I'll be providing here: http://www.arb.ca.gov/diesel/tru/tru.htm

needs a catalytic conver, must emit cleaner air then it pulls in. must have muffler. and must not idle when parked.

and a sensor to let carb police know it's carb certified.

have all that and your good to go. :biggrin_255:

    http://www.arb.ca.gov/arber/trureg/trucompliance.htm

or look at link posted by cabwrecker above.

Look over the website and also call them if in doubt, they are very helpful. (800)242-4450

You will need the info off your engine, serial #, etc, any current arb # on the unit which may be transferred to you after purchase. You may not want to buy that reefer if it's currently non-compliant or soon to be.

Don't quote me on this, but the engine that runs the reefer must meet the air standards that came into effect for diesel engines Jan 1, 2011. there is a deferment period if it was applied for before the effective date. All the large carriers applied and were granted that deferment. so if you're buying a used trailer from one of these carriers (or had been previously owned by) be sure you apply for the deferment. It is transferable forward. The deferment can be determined from the state if you have the engine model, ser#.
All engines on both trucks and reefers must meet the 2011 standards by January 1, 2020. So if you purchase this trailer and plan to keep it beyond that date, you must have it retrofitted to those standards and proof of it with you when you enter the state.
Now that being said, the chances of being asked for proof has been very lacking. So far (and this may change) enforcement has been very lax.
