Can a trucking company let you go due to height?

Hey everyone, I got my CDL this year in January with no problem even with me being short. Today I was let go by my company because they stated “they don’t hire to train” & when they hired me they knew I didn’t have any experience & I was fresh out of school. I was told last month when I got the job by the hiring manager that if he knew how short I was he would’ve never hired me but he interviewed me for the position the month before. So they found anything to let me go today (said I need more experience driving when I didn’t need any to apply for the position nor did I ever truly drive at all, I was basically a helper to other drivers). so I wouldn’t meet my 30 days. Is this legal? Is there truly a height for a CDL driver? I am only 4’10 btw. Thank you in advance guys.

Height is not viewed as a disability, so filing a complaint under the ADA probably won't help.

I don't see an issue, my wife is 5'2" and drove with me for 10 years.

Did the hiring manager give you a reason why your height would be an issue?

If they ditched you just for your height--congratulations!

It would appear that you have basically ducked a bullet. Your (previous) employer wasn't/isn't worth working for, anyway.

Unfortunately...your original post is "short" on information....there are so many possible unknowns here.

Are you a bit too short-tempered?

Are they a bit too short-tempered?

They may (or may not) be a bit too short-handed for new drivers....?

It's still basically a "driver's market" out there....so if you provide us with some information, we here on the Forum can help you find a much better job...for the "long haul"....:

    • What city/state is closest to you?
    • What CDL endorsements do you now have (if any)?
    • What type(s) of freight interest you most?
    • How much are you willing to be gone? OTR? Regional? Or home daily (or almost daily)?
    • What is your driving record like? What is your criminal history like?
    • Does your license have an automatic restriction on it?

It was a beverage company. In the original interview he stated he would put me on a bulk truck (I would just put it on the pallet & pull it out from the trailer into the customer’s store) some items I would have to lift & put on a two hander but nothing TO ME that would stop me. Maybe I’m just this confident because I’ve been this short all my life ‍♀️

Hey, so their turnover at the previous employer was HIGH as gas prices so they needed drivers like crazy.

I reside in Hampton, Virginia & I’m willing to travel no more than an hour to work if I have to.

I don’t have any endorsements right now but I feel like maybe I need some to get taken serious.

I would do LTL or touch freight.

I would like to be either regional or Home Daily or almost Home Daily since I have a family.

I have one ticket from last summer 15-19 MPH over but that’s it. I have a clean criminal record.

& it does have an auto restriction on it.

Anything would definitely help as I just need someone to give me a REAL CHANCE to get my feet wet! Thank you in advance!

Are you sure they didn't decline employment based on that 15-19 over ticket? That's a pretty hefty one for their insurance company to swallow.

One of these might (and I emphasize....might) hire you....both involve touch freight, and are home daily; no previous CDL experience req'd....will train:

Delivery Truck Driver Trainee - Suffolk, VA 23437 - Indeed.com

These people just had a "National Hiring Day" on March 1st--& they may not be happy with their hiring "blitz" results....note also that multiple positions on this one exist--& so (because of all this) they may be more willing to cut you some slack on that ticket:

    CDL TRUCK DRIVER - Norfolk, VA 23504 - Indeed.com

Make no mistake...both of the above will involve hard work--hope your folks back home are/will be supportive....

There's 2 fairly recent threads of drivers looking for local work in Norfolk.
I'll try to find them if I can.
Lists of local cdl jobs in the area.
