I would like to get a chain hanger and attach it to the side of my trailer frame to hang my binders from. I have a co-worker who insists this is illegal, but I don't quite believe him.
According to 393.201, you can't weld accessories to the frame, but it doesn't say you can't drill holes and Bolt accessories to the frame. In fact, there are already a number of holes in my frame from the manufacturer for who knows what reason. What do you guys think?

Can I attach a chain hanger to my trailer frame?

I realize it probably isn't the best solution in the world, I am kind of just brainstorming ideas here LOL

Let her rip. Perfectly legal. I’m sure your wanting to hang snaps but I copied this idea from a guy for hanging ratchet binders.
His idea:
my version for inside the headache rack. I use heavy wall 1” square tubing.blairandgretchen, cke, CAXPT and 4 others Thank this. -
Why not get a work box? Keeps things a bit more organized and out of the weather.

That looks awesome. What I was picturing is one rack for snaps and possibly one for ratchets. Not necessarily these exact ones but something similar.
Unfortunately, being that I am in a daycab with low roof, I am stuck with this fairly basic headache rack:

I have 2 aluminum boxes, and currently stowing a dozen or so chains and all my straps in one, which is way too much weight. Other box contains tools, edge protectors and other odds and ends. My plan was to move the binders down to the frame, then hack that lid off my headache rack box and hang the chains on there to lighten up the box.Last edited: Oct 9, 2023

You have to watch drilling holes in frames. Over time it could cause cracks to form, starting where you penetrated the frame, depending on the weight of the loads you haul.

have you considered either a between the frame box in place of the catwalk, or step boxes mounted to the truck frame to replace your current stairs. These would be used for the items that you don’t use a lot or rare that you carry with you.cke, CAXPT, Another Canadian driver and 1 other person Thank this.

Definitely remove lid and store xhains in headache rack, what about just mounting a binder hanger in one of your box though?
grab an aluminum flat bar backer about 1/4x4" x a bit longer than the binder hanger, then you can just bolt or weld it on. Store the least used set of binders there (or the ratchets to keep them clean and dry)
At that point, since the binders are vertical and the chains are iut of the boxes, should have plenty of room to put 4 milk crates for straps and edge protectors in the other boxcke, CAXPT, Another Canadian driver and 1 other person Thank this. -
I don’t think there is quite enough room for a step box between the fuel tanks and the leaf springs, but a box mounted on the catwalk area would probably work. I will look into that!cke, CAXPT and Another Canadian driver Thank this.
