Can I use rachet tie down to strap a box to my catwalk while bobtailing?

Yes, but reg's require 2 - 2" ratchet straps X'd across front and back and don't forget the Vee-boards !

just kidding ! but yah, if you own the truck, why not ? just make double darn sure it's secure.

Yeah I have friends with pickups but we do not talk on a daily basis anymore and I would hate to call them up just to use them for their truck... Plus I am independent I never ask for favors at all. I guess I could rent a truck for $20, but if there was no problem with it I would just strap it down to my catwalk on the way home.

Thanks Chompi that is a good idea but this isn't permanent just needed to buy a large item from a store that is a little too big to fit in the trunk of my car but could fit across my catwalk.

Its a company truck but I doubt they would mind as I may do it the next time I have home time and I pass right by the store. I have four rachet straps for a 100 pound item in a box that is probably about six feet wide and a foot in height shouldn't be a problem. The rachet tie downs are rated at 1000 pounds. However the tie downs are 16 feet long, not sure if I should get some shorter ones due to extra slack or just try to tie them off. I am not a flatbedder so I am not a pro at that like you guys :p

If it's not your truck I wouldn't do it. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal, but you'd be surprised how your perspective changes when you're the one paying $700/month for insurance on that truck. There's a reason why we don't haul much of anything for under $500, it's a liability. Park your truck at Menard's, they have rental pickups for $19.95 + mileage or something like that. Or Uhaul, Penske, etc...

not to mention at 6 ft. wide it's prolly gonna hit your tires depending on how long it is.

If it fits: I don't see why there'd be a problem. I've strapped things to my catwalk before.. for added storage basically. I don't think any company would care either unless it damages their equipment.

Daisy-chain the excess strap. You can easily get it down to four feet or less. You can then just secure the excess with some tape to hold it in place. I posted a video to help in case you aren't familiar with daisy chaining. Good luck.

Thanks, I plan on using on of those binder holder things for the excess. I also bought some shorter tie downs. The ones I had originally are 16 feet long so I bought a couple of 6 footers. Interesting video, there is a site for everything lol.

Legally wouldn't it be considered a flatbed load therefore require a headboard on the truck?...talking pure legality, not common sense which says it would be fine.
