Can job fairs be a good way to get into fuel/oil hauling?

I don’t remember if it was on this forum or the oilfield forum, but I saw where someone posted that they lived in Texas working a job, and they took a vacation to North Dakota for several days and found them a job at a job fair and relocated there very shortly after. Do other states have job fairs with hazmat driving opportunities?

I understand that I’d probably need to plan to relocate up north, as the fuel hauling jobs in the south are too highly coveted to get hired on unless you have many years of experience. I also realize that some of the companies that hire drivers with no hazmat experience may not be the most enjoyable to work for (I’ve seen reviews on Indeed of people saying to “get your experience and go elsewhere”). But I figure it’s the equivalent of a newbie driver working for a mega carrier; it’s a total drag to work for them but you bear up and do it for the next couple of years until you get the experience to find something better. I’m willing to work nights, weekends and holidays, and I’ll probably work 70 hours weekly during busy season (I’ve read some places make you work a 6th day if you haven’t run out your 70 hour clock).

I have a little over 2 years driving a tractor-trailer dump, and FWIW 3 years prior to that in a tandem, all with a 10-speed. Could it be a good idea for me to attend a job fair up north? I think I would prefer West Virginia due to the low living costs compared to the pay (I’ve seen plenty of jobs ranging between $25-30 hourly with $600 month rentals in the area), or perhaps Ohio. While they’ll have some tougher winters than what I’m accustomed to, they’re not as bad as the Dakotas.

Edit: I have no desire to go OTR, and I’d prefer not to sleep in a man-camp.

The higher requirements are what the insurance requires; more likely, they dictate who a company can hire. That said, they don't want someone who hasn't hauled fuel or hauled liquid, at the very least, normally, that is the minimum. Just the other day, someone put water in a fuel holding tank at a gas station in Oklahoma. Every single vehicle that was fueled there had their cars destroyed. Another person near my neck woods put diesel in both holding tanks, same thing, everyone had engine problems after they started their cars and got about 10 miles down road before they shut down, and the entire dash lights up like a Christmas tree. They have hiring events, but if you don't meet the requirements you driving there to said events would be a waste of money. Your best hiring event would be proper info from an expert on these forums to help you land a job. @Chinatown

Search the jobs websites and enter what you want.
    You can search by state.
For example Enter: Oil Field, CDL driver, Texas or North Dakota or West Virginia, etc.

I would just call KAG recruiting and tell them you really want to haul fuel and are willing/able to relocate anywhere, and have them direct you to the best terminals to apply. 800-871-4581

As far as I know, job fairs with hazmat positions only happen in busy oilfield areas like the Permian and the Bakken.
