It was that way at first, but it was changed or taken out of the regulations when they decided a 34 must contain two periods from 1 to 5 am. Also if your carrier does not run every day of the week, you can go on the 60 hours in 7 days rule yet.

No where in the regulations does it state a specific amount of time for either. Most companies require that you put down a minimum of 15 minutes for one or the other. That is why I worded it that way.

It use to be that way, but a later post said it was changed with one of the recent revisions. So I stand corrected.

That is correct, M. However. Let's say you start your clock at midnight, drive 10 or 11 hours, then take your 10hr safety rest break. Now you've used 20 or 21 hours of that 24hr period. (HOS rules assume a starting point of midnight) So, theoretically (some people like night driving) you can start line 3 again at 21:00 or 22:00 - driving until that midnight you can get in 13 or 14 hours of driving in a 24 hour period. It happens. Not often, but it does happen. You can do this in any 24 hour period, but as far as it counts against your HOS log, that'll change.

Notice no one here has yet offered to introduce you to the infamous "split break" situation. Or, the even more terrifying "Reverse split break." I will, if you ask nicely.

HOS and logging is one of the most favorite topics in here. There will be no end to it; until the world ends we'll be sharing our opinions.

Go to your local truckstop sit at the counter and drink coffee all night and by sunup you should have been told everything you need to know and more.

He said he wanted to be a driver, not a fiction writer.

Although the latter has more reasonable hours and pays better.

I'll throw in my dos centavos.

Its the 14 hour clock you have to worry about. Once you hit on-duty or start pre-trip (which automagically puts you on-duty) that clock starts ticking.
    Tick tock, tick tock.

And, that 14 hours can come down and start eating into your 11 if conditions are right (shipper taking forever to load). Sure the more experienced guys will say "Hit off-duty after a bit".
But, that don't stop that 14 hours from ticking away.
You gotta get all your driving done within 14 hours of hitting "on-duty" which includes starting pre-trip.
    Tick tock, tick tock.

AND, at least with peoplenet, you can take a 30 minute starting at 8:29 left on your 11 hour driving clock.
So technically, you don't have to worry about the 30 minutes again, right. Takes you to 7:59 left on your drive clock, which is more than 8 hours.
Nope, if you take a 20 minute break for grabbing dinner, whatever, you'll see that you have another 30 minute break required before you can complete that 7:59 hours driving you had left after your first 30 minute break.
    WTH???

The first night of a reset, you can drink like a teenager, the second night you have to drink like a responsible adult.
