This is why you track your fuel economy against miles traveled and fuel purchased. Never trust your fuel gauge. When in doubt, open your fuel tank and shine a flashlight in there.

I was right on. I just didn't know where running out was. It's just an inconvience for me, not facing engine catastrophe for doing so.

DOT limits auxiliary portable fuel tanks to 8 gallons (for gasoline). Probably no limit for diesel.

I ran out about twenty feet short of the fuel pump. And I didn't have the momentum to coast it there. Talk about frustration

So here is a stupid question ...

If you put it in the trailer, up at the nose and you runout of fuel with a loaded trailer.

How do you get to the fuel cans in the trailer?

    Bean Jr. Thanks this.

We have fuel at the yard. I shuttle to the warehouse and back, so 5 miles one way...
I start looking to fuel when the fuel gets below 1/2 a tank. :)

That’s why I carry a wooden stick. I trust the stick more than the gauge.

Stick is OK, but remember that it introduces crap into your fuel system every time you stick your tanks. Most electronic logs will show your fuel used for the day. Write it down and keep track of it.

If you have jugs of fuel and it can be seen by DOTopen you better have them secured with tie Downs if you install an external tank you cannot have more than 119 gallons anything more than that is Hazmat with placard
