So I'm wondering what happens if you are diagnosed with cancer. Will they end up pulling your medical card? Asking for a friend

The card is good until it expires. You just won’t get a new one when it comes time to get another one. Don’t take this as fact just something I overheard in the trucker lounge some time ago.

As far as I know, your med card is valid until it expires. TBH, I am not sure if it can be revoked or not. I guess it could but I've never heard of it.
As for cancer, as long as a MD examines you & determines that you meet the qualifications set by FMCSA, your good. As far as I know, cancer itself isn't a dis-qualifier. There's all sorts of cancer. Each is different.
Again, as long as your eye sight, BP, you have all your limbs, your sugar is within the guidelines, etc, etc, you can qualify. I think it will come down to your physical ability to drive & meds you're taking. Some cancer meds may disqualify you but I dont know that.

But let’s say you get a 2 year med card in February and then in May you switch companies and they make you take a new physical and you flunk.
Now your 2 year card is useless.

No. That is not a problem.

If you can physically drive with that ow go for it. It's when that Chemo kicks in destructing your ability to think clearly that is a problem. We are cancer survivors going on 14 years. I recall that it took 6 before my spouse woke up one day. I had to do everything for her, it did not take that long to get white hair in the late 30's

If the doctors tell you that the cancer will kill you, it's best to get home and make your arrangements early so that if you did die it's all arranged. You will drive until a certain point when it's just too much. And it will stop. You will not care for it at that point in time anyway.

Sorry to hear about your friend. That’s not good news.

I’d assume your card is valid until you renew. Then , as said, if you still qualify - you’re good.

Guy I know had bowel cancer I think and still drove. Think he beat it out.

Yes your card can be pulled, that said I know people that have kept theirs while fighting cancer.
I do know seizures can get them pulled, I think it depends on what doctor you are seeing.

What medical conditions disqualify a commercial bus or truck driver?
    PreviousNext

The truck driver must be medically qualified to not only drive the vehicle safely, but also to do pre and post trip safety inspections, secure the load and make sure it has not shifted. Bus drivers have different demands.
By regulation, Specific Medically Disqualifying Conditions Found Under 49 CFR 391.41 are Hearing Loss, Vision Loss, Epilepsy and Insulin Use.
Drivers who require a Diabetes or Vision exemption to safely drive a CMV in addition to those pre-printed on the certification form are disqualified until they receive such an exemption.
