Why would you want a cdl a without air or semi? You won't be able to drive anything

You asked about a "Cdla", which I think he took to mean a class A CDL.. In that case the test has to be taken in a truck with a weight rating over 10,000 lbs, and the combination of truck and trailer must be over 26000 lbs. Others have pointed out the air brake restriction.

Here's the URL for the FMCSA qualifications for the various license classes, endorsements, and restrictions: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/commercial-drivers-license/drivers

No. A 1-ton dually pickup is a class 3 truck with a GVWR of 14,000. No trailer you can put behind it will turn it into a Class A combination vehicle.

Short of the long: you can't drive a semi if you can't drive a semi.

This is the exact question I have been looking for. I am in the process of buying a 3500 dually with a two car hauler that will put me over 26,001 and I previously had my CDL in NJ years ago but let it go and now have a basic license in NC. Right now I am under the weight but want a CDL. I don't need half the stuff the entire course teaches I just need a truck and trailer to take the skills test. Very informative question.

truck and trailer must be RATED at over 26,000.. it doesn't need to weight over 26,000 when you test

Yes, he could take the driving test portion with a 1-ton and trailer. I did it here in Oregon, passed and got my CDL. The only thing is though, he wouldn't have the Air Brakes Endorsement because the truck he takes the test with doesnt have air brakes. In other words, he wouldn't be able to drive a semi. But yes absolutely, he can take a CDL test (both the inspection portion AND driving portion) with a 1 ton dually and a trailer. Hope that helps.

With all do respect, you are in correct. I took my CDL test with a 1 ton dually (14k GVWR) and a 40' Goosneck (24k GVWR) giving me a combined GVWR of 38K and got my class A CDL. The requirements for a class A drivers licence are: 1) if your combined GVWR is 26001 lbs or grater OR, you pull a trailer that has a GVW greater than 10,000 lbs.
