Well, besides the video on YouTube I always considered it mostly just trucker tales at the lunchcounter. That is, until it happened to me this morning. Just shy of 20 years out here, and never even saw it happen to someone else..
Some f**king scumbag piece of #### pulled my fifth wheel lock! I never really check the handle or locking jaws except when hooking up to my trailer. Not now....
From now on I'm popping my trailer brakes first when parking, then pulling against the kingpin before popping the tractor brakes. Then I'm still doing a visual check in the morning.
It was fortunate I tend to park in the back of truckstops and I had the trailer come off in the lot while making a turn towards the exit, maybe 200 - 300 yards from my spot. Plus even though it didn't register WTF I was hearing right away, I still had a quick reaction and stomped the brakes, and caught the front corner of the trailer on my rear axle drive tires, so it didn't go all the way to the ground. I'm getting too friggen old to be cranking my landing gear for over 20 minutes.....
Scumbag is lucky there wasn't any cameras in the area I parked...
Can't believe how lucky I got today..

Or do you Believe it was just a random stroke of Luck??

Not sure. I was thinking about it all day, and the only thing I can think of was maybe the dude I parked next to was passed that I idled all night? I remembered when I got out to do a postquick post trip, his window was down because his little ankle biter barked at me. By the time I walked back around the other side of the truck the window was closed.
I also noticed his truck was still off when I got back from the restaurant an hour or so. later, when I cranked her up and went to sleep. I'm a Florida boy and it was friggen below 40 last night.
I'm idling.Dave_in_AZ and stayinback Thank this. -
lol.Cute! -
Set trailer brake, pull against the trailer then set tractor brake.
Not even God himself or the Devil can pull that kingpin. It is almost standard parking procedure straight out of school 40 years ago.
When leaving, visually inspect 5th wheel pin and kingpin lock to make sure both are in place If the handle is out of it's hole DO NOT get under that GD 5th wheel. Back into it again until it locks first.
Just a moment before actual departure, take a moment, set trolley brake or leave the red button in a minute, do a GENTLE low gear tug against your own trailer. It should give you a hard resistance. IF you hear a loud CLICK and begin to move, stop right there while's still on the plate. Back into it.
If all secure, take off. Have a good drive.
Make this part of your routine every time you touch that truck. And maybe one day scumbag will burn when you defeat him at his own game.rolls canardly, HighwayD, Dave_in_AZ and 3 others Thank this. -
This driver got very lucky as well after the trailer jumped off the 5th wheel.
Dave_in_AZ, Mudguppy and x1Heavy Thank this. -
If I ever step out of the truck. I always check the 5th before I get back. Always. I hear way too much talk about pulling 5th wheels because of *insert excuse here*
