Are you working there now or are you just thinking of working there?

It all depends. Only you know yourself and what's best for you. US Express is definitely the more reputable company so it helps in that regard. If they'll hire you, I'd consider it. They have dedicated runs, OTR, a little versatility. Whichever direction you go, I'd stay long enough for the accident to fall off. 1099 companies are good if you need to clean up your record some. I am of thr unpopular opinion that they have a place for the industry, especially since the road to redemption after a screw up is so daunting with reputable companies. If you're only going to run with the 1099 guys for the short term, I don't see the problem. I did it for 6 years. I stayed longer than I should have, but I wasn't aware of my options after 3 years. You gotta do what's best for you. Put all of your fires and move on. You being in Florida, they have companies based down there, mainly reefer. Since you like flatbed, that's where it gets tricky.

Thanks bryan for being reasonable. Yes I agree that most of the time 1099 is probably a bad idea for most people, especially if they have better options. I've also read some of your posts where you question some of that conventional wisdom (around 1099 companies) and I appreciated that.

Wherever I end up, I plan to stay, until enough time has passed I can get something better. Maybe a year or more down the line, I start applying to some better opportunities (while still staying where I am). So I need to be able to make it that far. And I don't see that happening if I am out for weeks/months at a time and just come home for a few days and right back out again. Totally unsustainable, at least for me.

Plus this way I can get back into flatbed. And maybe even oversize, step, RGN, etc. Longer term I want to get into those kind of things, this would be more in line with that. There are not a lot of companies who will hire you for that coming out of Florida.

Oh yeah it sounds to me like you know you're doing. You've got a plan and you at least know what you're getting into. It's a means to an end. I think you'll be fine.

If you're looking to move up, US Express is a better avenue than a 1099 company. All the company BS is going to annoy the piss out of you, but "US Express" as a line on the resume means more than "No Name Fly By Night Carrier". You're also less likely to be "FORCED" into doing something that will make your MVR worse.

Beyond all that, you're less likely to be screwed monetarily. Yes, your 20 years of running a business will help you avoid the tax pitfalls of 1099s but it will not help you get paid what you've earned. If the 1099 decides to shut down they will keep running the truck as long as they can without paying you or the fuel card. That will leave you 1,000 miles from the house two weeks behind on pay and with no fuel.

    Best of luck.
