Trying to change my career up and get into trucking for better pay and opportunity as an o/o eventually.
Need help finding a school. Looking to get my license and a job all in one place. Would rather go over the road than work the docks for 6 months. Being home on weekends for the family is ideal, if possible.
Not picky on freight type to just get my foot in the door. Long term aspirations are tanker or car hauling. What are yall’s opinions on the two for work life, local opportunity, pay, available work, etc?
30 years old out of Dallas, Texas near Wilmer.
Ready to work with clean driving record and no criminal history.
Any direction is appreciated!

This company hires new cdl school grads from select schools.
Great pay from day one.
If this company interests you, find out which schools they hire from.

Trucking industry is slow right now, freight rates are in the toilet. Companies going out of business. EVERY CDL school will ALWAYS say "now's a good time to go to school" even when it is not a good time throw another inexperienced, high-risk newbie into the driver pool. There is no 'truck driver shortage'. The media just hasn't switched from 'Joe Biden's economy is great' so some people are still hearing that whopper of fake news.
DO NOT GO TO CDL SCHOOL UNTIL YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHERE YOU WILL WORK. You will have to repay the school loan even if you can't get hired or you only get hired next year. Adding a $8k school loan payment to your bills will not make you better financially unless you get hired. 80-90% of brand new CDL students will leave trucking long before they work 12 months in trucking. Self-driving trucks aren't going to put truck drivers out of business, but millions of immigrants willing to work for half of the pay you would need, might.Flat Earth Trucker, CrewNeck101 and Lonesome Thank this. -
For OTR, coast-to-coast, take a look at KLLM.

During this current economy, I'd put refrigerated trucking as first choice and flatbed freight as second choice.
`
These two flatbed companies have their own cdl school:

Schneider has tanker division. I think you have to pull dry van for 3 months first though right out of cdl school, then transfer to tanker school in Houston for tanker training.

I know you don't want dock-to-driver, but I'll post this one anyway.
