Is adding the noise reduction package worth it?

  1. Yes, it's a worthwhile reduction in sound

I just talked to my local Carrier dealer. He couldn't even give me a quote on the 7500, said last time they installed one was in 2016 :)

I asked about the Stealth 2 option, he said he personally doesn't recommend it, since a lot of heat is getting trapped inside the unit. I don't know how true that is or how much difference it makes, but that's what I was told.

I'm ordering a new Utility 3000R. The difference between a TK S-600 and Carrier X4 7300 with Stealth package included is $7,065. We decided to go with the Carrier as the price difference is simply too difficult to ignore. We are not getting the DPF filter as it is not needed for the first 7 years of operation and we do not plan on keeping it that long. It can be added at any point though.

I have two S700 units. The remarks about high speed operation are correct. They get loud. However, that's only when running a frozen load in the summer, or recovering after a defrost cycle. If the outside temp is lower than around 70ºF mine run on low speed and just purr even on a -10ºF setting. Honestly, debating about noise on newer reefer units is a non issue. Provided the cabinets and guts are intact, carrier may be a little noisier, but it's a rounding error IMO. No matter which one you get, it's still a 4 cyl diesel engine running 5 feet away from your bed.

My S700s replaced SB210's (and older trailers to be fair). My reefer fuel bill has dropped about 30% in the summer and 50% in the winter, running a roughly 50/50 mix of frozen and produce loads.

The S-series is Cali compliant indefinitely due to the common rail setup. I bought mine for resale value, as I don't go west of I-35. The next owner might like that feature and pay a little more for my hand me down.

The PM service on the S-series is a lot more expensive, as the service includes cleaning out the EGR cooler. Of course at 3000 hrs, so at least (for me) it's about once a year. The last one was right at $700 and takes longer to get done. You won't want to be waiting on it. A lot of guys do it themselves. I guess they'll figure it out and spend a little more time doing the job.

What would drive me nuts is those carriers that have the variable idle speed. Engine speed constantly drifting up and down. Probably more noticeable because of the compressor whine due to the design.

I have had SB210's and older carriers. Carriers are cheaper to buy, cheaper to repair. But they break down more often. TK is more expensive, parts are gold plated, but they don't break down as often. Avoiding downtime was my selling point. Biggest noise issue I ever had was the carriers cracking exhaust manifolds. TK will do it too, just less often.

    Excellent replies guys, thank you!

Touching on the heat issue, i think the one dealer May be kinda over thinking and not realizing the cooling stack is what keeps the motor cool not the casing of the unit... With proper design.

I really really like the X4-7300 , as noted the fuel economy is really quite amazing , allot is attributed to the engine and refrigeration governing in the newer units i guess. Maximum efficiency.

The intake on my X4-7300 doesn't have any sound dampening but the doors are insulated. I might try a intake muffler and see how it does.... This has been very effective by car OEMs for decades.
