A CDL permit is just like your driving permit before getting your permanent liscense. It say that you understand the general rules of the road for the vehicle you wish to learn to drive whether it be 2-4 or 18 wheels. It is a learners permit.

Are you going to school in Michigan?

I asked this exact question of the school I will be going to, Sage in Kingman AZ. Since in my case (I am currently in CA)
I need to wait until I arrive at school, since I need to test in the same state as I go to school and CDL test in.

I just went and got my MI CDL A TIP Monday of this week (in Michigan). I start school in Wisconsin this coming Monday. My CDL TIP says nothing about only being valid in MI. I assume it's the same as a regular driver's license in the fact that it transfers from state to state. Since you have to be a resident of the state to get the TIP, you'd have to go through all kinds of hoops if that weren't the case.

I'm actually kind of upset I don't see my CY endorsement on my TIP. If they took it off, I'm going to be IRATE. I checked the box that I'll be operating a motorcycle on public roads. :|

I'm sure more experienced drivers here can answer that in regards to other states. I only can confirm information from Sage,
that AZ requires me to turn in my CA DL, to get a AZ CDL Permit.

Then you need to get with the Secretary of State, and the sooner the better. Show them your old license (with the CY endorsement) so they can fix it (and give you a new TIP). That way, when you turn all your paperwork in to get your permanent CDL, it will be fixed on it. Otherwise, your cycle end. will be gone, and you will have to go through the process to get it back.

And you wil take your test(s) for your TIP BEFORE you start training. That way, when it somes time to start your on-the-road class, you will be ready to go (including your medical card).

The school I went to required the TIP beforehand. I think some schools have you study and obtain the TIP during your first week. Ask your school.

I have my TIP and my DOT card... you have to have the TIP before you operate on any public road. Some schools may teach you the information necessary to get the TIP, but I know by this Friday I'll be on public roads, so I don't have that luxury.
