Ive had the hazmat endorsement since 2011 as a cdl B. Im about to get a cdl A this friday but if i keep my hazmat, my license will be good for only up to 2016 instead of 2022. I never had a tanker or hazmat job. Is it worth keeping it or should i just drop it?

Do you plan to pull hazmat tankers in the near future? If so, keep the endorsements. Several good companies will hire you if interested.

I'd keep it, even if you don't plan on hauling hazardous. You might change your mind later, or situations might force you to. Keeping it gives you options, which is never a bad thing.

Many LTL companies require you have tank and hazmzt, So its not just to pull tankers

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

In my not so humble opinion, I would advise going ahead and getting the hazmat AND tanker endorsement as well. The hazmat endorsement is just another tool for marketing yourself to potential employers AND the FMSCA has re-defined what a tank that requires a tank endorsement is, hazardous or not, any container over 119 gallons and over 1000 lbs aggregate, is considered needing an endorsement. While the ATA has petitioned them to go back to the old definition, some states are already enforcing the provision. http://www.landlinemag.com/Story.aspx?StoryID=23685#.UxmT4fldV5A

My wife's company forced all of their drivers, even the class B's to get the tanker endorsement to add to the hazmat already required for her job.

Where do you live that your license would be good until 2022? Ours here in Ohio have to be renewed every 4 years.

For a regular cdl A or B w/o hazmat, its good for 8yrs here in FL which would give me until 2022(2014+8=2022). Cdl with hazmat endorsments only get 4yrs because the TSA/DHS background check which gives me only until 2016 because i had my hazmat endorsement since 2011(2011+4=2016). I had it on my Cdl B including passenger and tanker but never had a job as one. Now when i get my new cdl A today, im still going to have my hazmat placed on it but the license is only good for 2 more yrs because of the hazmat i had since 2011. Thats why i was wondering if it was worth keeping it.
