There are some that do, but being in Cali the LTL Companies have a line of drivers trying to change out of OTR, and port drivers that have a year or two of experience. You will be standing in line and waiting for the herd to thin.
If you are underemployed, or unemployed, find center and see if you can get a WIOA Grant to pay for school. Basically they pay for your school, and all you have to do is finish it and get your CDL.

I see. Ya, am planning to get rid of my apt and go OTR so don't really have to be in Cali. ltl must be a good gig then. Regarding the WIOA, I am not sure if I qualify for it, I am switching careers after being laid off so they might say go back to your career.

You would be surprised. If you are looking and can't find a job in the field you were employed in, you have a good chance you will be approved. Make sure you fill out with unemployment that you want to receive training. If you do it early in the unemployment cycle your unemployment benefits will be extended however many weeks your training is.

In LA County I just helped a friend do his, from the time he turned it in, it took less than a week to be approved. I would imagine since they are all run by EDD now. Worth a shot, worse case scenario they say no, but they should give you a feel for a yes or no when you turn it in.

Hey, do they have specific schools they make you go to? Or can you use the money to go to your school of choice?

They have a list of accredited school, all of which are a minimum of 160 hours. They will give you access to the list, then you pick the top 3 you want to attend. I have yet to see anyone not get their first choice.
